In the latest OnePlus 5 Reddit AMA, OnePlus CEO Lau responded that there is some protection against water but did not intend to market it (something Apple has done with their iPhones until iPhone 7).

Well, here is a brave soul testing a brand new OnePlus 5 in water for a minute. And it survives - this is probably equivalent to our day to day life - going in the rain, getting splashes of water on our phone, dropping the phone in the water (or toilet) etc., So, OnePlus 5 should survive those accidental drops!

Again, this is not that you can take your OnePlus 5 into the water and use it. As you can see in the video, OnePlus 5 is unusable in the water.

Good to hear it has SOME protection, if not being fully water proof. :)

Cool, though I'd like to know if the ports still work...

Either way, I wouldn't count on this, but I've heard it would be the equivalent of ip67... I really wouldn't take it for granted though.

I'd advise treating it the same way I'd advise using the S8, G6 or U11... As if it had no water resistance.

Probably not a good idea to use any of the "water resistant" phones for under water photography. Yes, just call me Captain Obvious!

A lot of phones actually have some degree of water protection.

That said, even if your phone is rated, please don't purposely try to get it wet.

You should treat ANY phone, even those that are water proof or water resistant as if they were NOT! Don't tempt fate! That being said it's certainly good to know the OP5 has SOME protection.

Nice to see there are a few people who look at water resistance the right way.

All the "I love using my phone in the pool/sea" people make me head desk... Even if it's 100%water tight, that doesn't factor in chlorine or salt water.

It's all fun and games until your ports and switches crumble to dust from corrosion.

The best test is to simulate real life scenario like dropping it off a bucket of water but still quickly pulling it out immediately.. just like a real accident. If it still works, then it passed!

wow thanks for this vid. I dont plan on bathing with my phone, but I was worried about the rain.

Definitely give a +1 for this 😃

It's great to hear there is some sort of water resistance in case something bad does happen. But unless you have 2 OnePlus 5 devices, I wouldn't recommend "testing" their promise haha.

Kinda wish every single smartphone had some sort of water resistance. Would make the cost of repairing devices lower for manufacturers. So it could be a win win.

I was pretty impressed with water resistant OP5. There are rumors stating that OnePlus did no want to waste money on certifying it ! Hence saving money and providing water resistance. Is this a tactic ? They should have aleast mentioned it onstage
