`OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER?

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

That is your personal opinion, and that is fine. But imo, that doesn't make it a killer phone. Does it have good specs? Yes. But is it lacking what I need? Yes as well. It has 64gb internal only. On my Note 3 I have 160gb internal plus external. Yes, the Note 3 costs more. But let's be realistic about things for a second. If cost/specs was a main concern then no one would buy iPhones, whose specs pale compare to android. For the best cost/spec ratio before the oneplus one, it would be the nexus series. But how well does the nexus smartphones sell? In online forums you see a lot of people talking about them, but in real life, I have never seen anyone with a nexus 4/5, but a lot of people with S3/S4/N2/N3. And at least, the Nexus has two advantages. Pure android and made by google. And yes, name makes a big difference. Let's say that someone else made the phone identical to the nexus 5, but the company was not a well known name. It would not sell anywhere as well as the Nexus 5, which doesn't sell as well as say the S4 anyway.

Aside from that, it doesn't support Verizon, which the s5//n3/m8 all support. and even though it works on AT&T, it is missing bands 2 and 5 support which at&t uses in limited deployment, and Tmobile will be deploying band 2 lte starting this year. Not to mention, it doesn't have a stylus or removable battery or microsd card. It doesn't support carrier aggregation. So there certainly are things that it is missing that matter to some people. To me, I do not consider it equivalent to a Note 3, for my needs. But if it meets your needs, then great.

Yes, I was just telling you my personal opinion and what made it really popular out there. I think $350 is a very nice, and solid price for the specs and storage it provides.

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

For the price I'll definitely get it, specs are comparable to my note 3, and saving that 30$ a month would be a godsend for me, definitely worth the sacrifice. Not to mention I'd buy it at once. It'd be 100% mine and if it broke it wouldn't be as big a deal. Idk, just it being so cheap and yet so good, especially with battery, it's a killer in my book. I love the s pen and removable battery and SD card slot but Jesus, for less than half the price, the choice is simple. Obviously I'd have to check it out in person and see some more real world reviews but so far, it's looking like a go.

Definitely good specs for the price. But for me, it just isn't killing other phones.

This is what makes Android so interesting and vibrant--the sheer variety and options out there, with new devices coming out all the time. Whether you're personally interested in the OnePlus One or not, it can only be a positive influence on the market.

But what I wonder is, when will HTC sue OnePlus for trademark infringement? It's going to get awfully confusing with all of these "One" phones out there.

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

I think it's a great phone for people who want a great phone that isn't groundbreaking or stunning feature wise, but gives you great specs, solid software, and a good design for a more than reasonable off contract price.

The only thing I don't like about the phone is the design of the back and that I can't use it on sprint and would have to change carriers to use it.

It would have been perfect for me, because it would allow me to have a good phone as I wait for the eventual 5.5 inch iPhone that reportedly is being delayed another year

The most important reason why it isn't a killer phone to me is because it's not being sold by carriers. It's already lost out on like 95% of the US market right there. An average person can't just walk into their local retail store and get one. They'd have to somehow find out about it, then go online, then wait for an invite to buy it, and then go get it activated. It's just a mess for someone who isn't like you or me.

But how well does the nexus smartphones sell? In online forums you see a lot of people talking about them, but in real life, I have never seen anyone with a nexus 4/5, but a lot of people with S3/S4/N2/N3.

The only Nexus phone I've seen is my friend's...and that's because I talked her into getting it. :P

I listened to Tech News Today the other day and the invitation system is to minimize frustration in the face of supply issues. They are sure they won't have enough stock, and rather than have people complain that OnePlus can't keep up with demand, they want consumers competing to get an invitation. That's about as smart as you can do that without ticking off your entire community.

This "destroy your flagship phone" promotion is idiotic but crazy enough that people are talking about it. I think OnePlus is again demonstrating they are masters of hype.

I'm also thrilled with how they are disrupting the market. Nexus and Motorola have so far paved the way to rock bottom prices on phones with amazing specs but always with a tradeoff or two. Both the Nexus 5 and the Moto X have small batteries and the Moto X makes some resolution and processor sacrifices. I'm not knocking the phones. I love my N5, but I do dream of longer battery life.

The One doesn't make any of these sacrifices and still comes in at rock bottom prices! It's a race to the lower price now, which is good news for us! OnePlus, keep doing what you're doing. Raise our expectations while lowering price!

I see this phone being on par with new devices, but half the price.

Not seeing how it's a flagship killer in 2014, still 8 months left for another device to be released lol

Definitely good specs for the price. But for me, it just isn't killing other phones.

It's really hard to say until the masses get the device in their hands... On paper it looks pretty darn good... but a lot of things look good "ON PAPER" What's long term support going to be like? and by long term I mean 1 - 2 years.... To me the support side of it makes buying a higher priced Samsung device worth the money you pay....

for $349 I'd buy one tomorrow to play around with.... I didn't root my Nexus 5 because it does what I want without the bloatware but my GS3 and My original EVO before that were rooted and I ran Cynaogenmod often so it at least sounds like a good idea.....

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

Yes, of course, the way they announced it and introduced it, it seems like a really awesome phone but we will have to test it and see what its like

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

It will only be a flagship killer if it kills other device in sales. It`s only available off contract, so only Android enthusiasts are going to get in the first place, ans that means Nexus device sales which would be good for smaller company like OnePlus, but they aren`t going to shake the whole industry up.

Re: OnePlus One phone - 2014 FLAGSHIP KILLER? What do you think?

I do like the price and the specs are pretty much top notch also. I think with these new phones coming out at great prices like moto x and this. Samsung will have to lower their prices to keep up.

Imo, everyone should wait a bit before purchasing. Bet it takes a long time to return or get repairs etc since it will probably ship from China, among other things

It won't kill anything, but it's can be a great device

Depends on what you can afford.... I don't want to just throw away $349 but at the same time I can afford to spend $349 on what would basically be a second phone to my Nexus 5 and feel it out.... I had been toying with the idea of getting a second hand Note 3 off craigslist to test drive a little bit to see if I could deal with the larger phablet devices... I can buy this brand new for less than a used Note 3 (which I almost paid 450 for an unlocked Note 3 before this announcement came out) and considering I'd probably root it eventually to get ride of touch wiz and the rest of the useless Samsung bloatware this device is worth the roll of the dice....

If it's not worth the hype I'll try and sell it for whatever I can get back out of it and move on..... Maybe wait for the note 4 or Nexus 6 in the fall......

I doubt it. Even with the Moto X and Nexus smartphones, Samsung prices haven't dramatically decreased at all. Adding the OnePlus One to the mix, I don't really see it as being a game changer at this time.

I doubt it, Samsung has a following similar to Apple. They could increase the price and fan boys will still buy it.

People are getting the phones at the same subsidiary price they've been getting through carriers for years, so no matter how much they increase the price, people won't really notice

With the number of people buying phones outright and getting on Jump or Next or edge plans increasing, it will eventually be noticed.

People on those plans have the money to spend on phones so they don't care, lol
