Only see folders from WIN7

I have a Galaxy note 10.1, running 4.1.2 All of a sudden I can only see folders when connected to my PC. I see all the folders on the internal flash and on the SD card, but none of the files in the folders. I can still copy files to the device and see the new files, until I unplug the device. When plugged back in I'm back to only folders. This used to work; unfortunately, I don't know what I changed just before this started to occur.

The problem turned out to be that the tablet was connecting to the PC as a camera. There is a setting that says whether to connect as camera or MTP. I found this by looking at the tablet while it was connected and noticing that there was a USB icon in the notifications. When I touched this it brought me to Setting->Storage->USB where I can click on camera or MTP. Unfortunately when you go to Settings->Storage USB doesn't appear?! So I don't know how to get there except via the notification icon.
