Open message app to new text, not previous mesage

how do I change the default to show the new text in lieu of the previous place I was at in the text app

What messaging application are you using? I don't think Hangouts or the stock Samsung messaging application allow you to set those settings. However, something with a lot more customizability, such as Handcent, Chomp, or Textra, will allow you to close out of the current thread when the app is closed.
