opera mini 5 is here!

Once you all get the 2.1 browser that was ment to be on the droid, then you'll know what a browser is supposed to be.

The rendering is quick, but damn, the quality is crap.
The scrolling glide lasts about half a second, then it stops.
No pinch-zoom.
Try signing into these forums, that's an adventure.
Misaligns web pages.

I'm complaining about a free product because it isn't any good. Sure if someone gave me a free car I wouldn't complain, but if someone gave me a free toaster oven that's a POS in comparison to one I already have, for FREE, then why not?

Don't get me wrong, it has its ups; totally not worth it imo.
It isn't enough for something to work, it has to do it good, regardless if it's paid or not.

I'll take quality over speed any day.

My opinion though, if you like it, well, you like it lol
For now I'll stick with the droids stock 2.1 browser ;)

I posted several times here from Opera Mini, signing in was no problem at all. On a mobile device though I always stick to mobile versions of a site. I did not try signing into the full site.

The glide doesn't last as long, but it's smooth. There are transitions between webpages, and the color scheme is a nice touch. I honestly hate the stock browser's choppy scrolling. On any page that's ajaxed it gets choppy and miserable. I have tried the 2.1 browser as well and I'm sorry....but it's just not as smooth.

I agree that the fonts could be a bit prettier and the glide could last a little longer. For me though, the perks outweigh the drawbacks. Different strokes I guess, but I love it.

I think a lot of its quirks could be resolved by going NDK instead of using Dalvik too. Here's the irony though, a Dalvik web browser that's smoother than the custom built native stock browser. Way to go Google, those morons really screw up some basic stuff sometimes and I don't know if it's oversight or incompetence.

I never could get into Opera to begin with, on any platform. It was quick, I will say that..but overall I just don't care for the feel of it or how you have to alter it to get pages to load in a more normal fashion. It's an acquired taste I suppose...

Not the version I'm using, there is no choppiness.
It glides perfect and renders things correctly, and beautifully.

Quality wins me over anyday :)

I downloaded opera only cuz it gives you access to attach files in email. I didn't like the loss of multi and really like zoom cuz of my tree limb sized fingers. It only renders properly if you format regular if formatted for mobile it is stacked real funky kind like my old genious phone the Dare.

I share a lot of the same thoughts mentioned:

Hate the short glide
Have trouble clicking on things

Like the speed
Like that I can sync it with Opera on my computer, but I haven't committed to the move from Chrome so it hasn't been all that useful yet.

Opera is needed on Blackberry, but not Android. I downloaded it for my Eris and went right back to the stock webkit browser in less than 15 minutes. Opera Mini, however, was the only browser I ever used on my Storm 2.

browser

Just downloaded xScope GL for 1.5, and love it. It's like Google chrome. Finally a browser that lets me drag the page down to expose the address bar (like on iphone). The home page is a collection of links to your favorite pages. Give it a try people!

p.s. running it on VZ's droid eris.
