I am just curious what everyone's opinion of using this is. It seems to be redundant since contacts and calendar and such are generally stored on google servers as well.

How needed do you feel it is?

I found this confusing as well. Maybe there are things that backup assistant backs up that aren't synced to the Google account? Sure hope someone here knows.

I personally have not used the backup assistant but the Verizon rep used the application to backup my contacts from my BlackBerry Tour when I recently bought the Droid 2. Then loaded all my contacts to the Droid 2 using the app. So I could see a use for the app if you are think you may ever change phone systems.

You make a good point. More people are leaving BB's as well as feature phones and I can see where this app can come in handy if only used once or twice. Verizon was smart to include this app.
I just wish i wouldn't run in the background.

Yeah, the app exists for multiple platforms. I have it on my Tour and use it to back up my contacts as well. So, while it may seem redundant to those on Android devices, just know that the app is for other platforms too and is useful for those that don't have the automatic sync'ing that is done with Android.
