Optimus storage ?

I've been thinking of getting an Optimus V pretty soon. I've heard my wife complain about getting not enough memory errors when she attempts to download apps on hers. If my assumption is correct, the problem is the internal storage memory on the phone (8GB?).

I found myself reasoning like this: this OS is based on linux, linux can be pivot-rooted to a different storage device on boot, has anyone tried copying all of the folders for the system to a 32GB SD and pivot-rooting on boot so that the phone has 32GB of storage instead of the amount built into the phone? I realize that the internal memory would probably not be accessible like this but would give a good upgrade without having to fuss with this app will and this app won't move to SD. They would all be in "internal" storage.

Another question I had about the Optimus has to do with the Bluetooth. Can you use a bluetooth keyboard with it? That would make use much easier when you were in a position where it could be used.

Thanks everybody. I'll be waiting to hear something.

the phone has a 512 megabyte ROM storage area.

half of this is reserved for the OS itself, any remaining space is used for app storage.

most apps allow you to move their data to the SD card with no downside except you cant access that app when the phone is connected to a PC in SD card mode.

you have to manually move these apps to the SD card, but when you do, there is no real limit to the storage. even 1 GB is enough to store many, MANY apps (excluding games with large downloads, which the OV cant play anyways)

the SD card that comes with the phone is 2GB. but I've installed a 32gb in my old OV and it worked fine. so, get whatever SD card you will make the best use of.

also, booting from SD card has been done on OTHER android devices, so its technically possible, but I have never seen any dev mention attempting it on the OV. its just not needed when you can move the apps to SD, and the phone isnt powerful enough to make dual booting useful.

you might consider upgrading the phone to IHO CM7 when you get it, its a much better OS over froyo, and comes without bloat and leaves more free space on the internal storage for apps.

hope this helps.

also, yes, you can use bluetooth keyboards. I believe the functionality is native in 2.3 gingerbread, and I have no idea about froyo. I've heard you can navigate menus and browse using arrow keys and enter, as well as type in any area where the soft keyboard would come up. Havent tried it myself yet but will soon on my triumph with 2.3.7 android.

I was under the impression that the V only had 180mb of storage and the 512 was the ram? You learn something new everyday

it has 512 of RAM, of which a portion is given to the GPU and the rest for app and OS data (services, processes, apps currently running)

and 512 of ROM, which holds the OS and data that stays even without power.

its very similar to how your PC has a hard drive for storing the OS and programs and data, and the RAM which is purely temp storage for active, open programs.

180 mb of storage is what you get free after the OS takes its share of the total space.

I may be wrong and the OV might not have a full 512 of ROM, but it definately is more than 180, or else there wouldnt be any space for the OS itself.

You can also use one of the apps2sd flavors around. I personally have a 32gig sd with a 1gig ext3 partion & use the IHO rom. I also use dark tremor a2sd which links the apps automatically to the ext partition on the sd. In addition I ran the cache2sd command which also moves the dalvik cache to the ext3 partition. I never move anything to the sd because of this. I've had probably 200 apps installed without issue doing it this way. Some say the sd card life will be diminished by doing this. However, I'd rather be able to install the apps I want & not worry about the memory space.

I believe Link2SD does the whole thing in one step (once it's set up).
