Optimus V Battery Drain Optimization Tests Part 2

lol, mmarz, don't worry about it... very helpful information indeed. i was thinking in terms of a computer's speedstepping process and not even taking into consideration the time it takes to switch the proc speed when necessary, this is definitely helping me to better understand the workings of this phone...

^^ Yeah, he explained it best :)

And it's best to set the governor to Performance since it won't poll for load like it would if you used a different governor and set both limits to 750.

thank you both very much for all the information and insight... you're both very helpful!

You're welcome. The true test of all of this is to actually do it and see the results you get.

Right now, I have my phone topping out at 70 hours on stand by. That is with Wifi/3G always on, a sip client always on, Gtalk always on, overclocked to 806 constantly, and firewall profiles setup to block all non essential internet traffic when the screen is off.

well currently i'm not using wifi (i'm only ever at home or at work, home wifi is broken and the admins at work took wifi away, so no point...) and i have juicedefender set to disable 3g with screen off. i just flashed a new ROM and cleared battery stats so i'm not sure what kind of battery life i'll get just yet, but so far, i've been up for 8hrs, 36 mins and i've been playing around in the market and texting damn near constantly and i'm only at about 85%. but i am definitely going to make these changes after i get a battery life reading out of this current profile and report back here with my results. not that i doubt what you say will work, i'm just weird about wanting to complete this initial battery test so i have something to compare it to once i make these changes :p

what are these firewall profiles, and can you tell me where to get this firewall/setup the profiles?

^^ 3g is an absolute battery hog for me. Maybe it's because I only get 0-2 bars of signal at my home. Cell standby is at 61% and the airplane mode trick doesn't work for me.

I dunno if that is so great of battery life for you. I leave wifi on nearly all the time. I use 3g a lot. I leave gps on all the time. I get about 2% drain per hour. I text a lot (30 messages a day? maybe a few more?), I leave screen at 30% brightness.

I don't under clock, in fact, I overclock to 787. I use rodimus rom.

aw man that sucks that the trick doesn't work... the airplane mode trick works for me, what rom are you running?

i didn't think it was great either, but i use 3g a lot as well, and i text, like i said, damn near CONSTANTLY... like, between 400~600 a day, sometimes as many as 800 depending on who im talking to... so my screen is almost NEVER off... i'm not using gps, but i am overclocking to around 750, so i think that with the screen being on as much as it is, it is pretty acceptable.

that's what i wanted to run but i couldn't get it to work on my phone... it just sat at the splash screen for like 30 minutes after i installed it, tried again, same result. i ended up running LeslieAnn's Aphrodite 1.3.3 stable with Xionia 05 kernel and i couldn't be happier... i was having tons of issues with messaging and FC's on the stock virgin rom, and those have all vanished now.

Aphrodite was my other choice, but Rodimus is Ok for now. I do like that Aph is stripped of a lot of stuff that I'll never use that comes with the Google suite.

me too, i love all the free space on internal memory i started out with... i haven't even bothered copying anything to SD yet ^_^

WOW! I guess that is what your employer gets when they cut off your wifi. I'm sure some of those texts are work related :)

Here is the firewall stuff I spoke of earlier: http://forum.androidcentral.com/opt...ps-using-3g-wifi-save-battery.html#post788344

It is a little involved to get going, but once you have it setup, it is easy to change around.

lol, mayyyyybe ^_^ actually i have a pretty relaxed job. i work at my friends gaming lounge as a network administrator part-time, and i also have an office there where i do my own freelance computer work, so im pretty much my own boss.

but yeah, i text my boyfriend a lot, and there's maybe 6 or 7 others that i'm in pretty constant contact with... what can i say, girls like to talk a lot!!

thanks for the firewall info, i'm going to check it out right now.

Female - check
Has an Android phone that she likes to tweak - double check
IT nerd - triple check ;)

lol well if it's any consolation, it's a long distance relationship and there's no guarantee it'll work out ;-)

but yeah, i got my first computer when i was 8 and i've been absolutely obsessed ever since. especially with tweaking. and i'd absolutely die without my phone so it's a must to have it just the way i like it, and this battery thread helps a lot. i've been calculating drain based on my uptime/remaining battery percentage, and i went ahead and switched the CPU frequencies and governor to performance... the texting has kinda died down for the moment, so to keep usage up i've been reading slashdot over 3g and there is a noticeable difference... it's slight, but the screen has actually been on more constantly than with the incessant texting, so i think that does mean a significant difference.
