Options for controlling lights

Is the Philips Hue Bridge my main option to be able to control light bulbs? I would love to be able to not have a bridge required. Do you think we will be able to control bulbs directly from the Google home anytime in the near future?

lifx lights work well with GH. They have bulbs, light strips and such and they all can be controlled by the GH. without a hub.
