Oh, man. Sorry to hear that. I know those of us who preordered are so very excited for this. There is no way I'm fighting the lines tonight to doorbust Best Buy to get the old Transformer for $249. Not to mention, this new Prime is too sexy, too thin, and basically awesome^99 to pass it up.
My next door neighbor is an Asus reseller, similar to Amazon, but on a much smaller level. He is allocated a certain amount of stock that he may sell, but not over. I believe his stock date is around the middle of December, which means he can order up to the maximum of his preorder (if he wants, or has orders to fill). After his fill order, he gets another date set by Asus on when his next stock (or re-stock) of the item is available. But he is not told this in advance. He can inform Asus on what his expected stock amount from preorders can be but Asus decides in the end.
I believe Amazon, Best Buy, etc. are in similar situations. I remember when the original Transformer went on sale, Amazon was sold out in about 2 minutes. Maybe less, I can't remember.
Asus is following the examples set by many companies these days. Hype up an item, control the stock, inflate the expected pre-orders (by leaking processor speed tests, comparisons, leaks of the device in its entirety, and camera pictures/videos of the device) and release only small amounts through outlets and retails. Whether there is truly a manufacturing problem is anyone's guess. I'm sure we will hear about that in time.
Luckily (or unluckily) for us there are multiple outlets to order from. It's similar to the demand for the iphone 4s. In my area, Best Buy (all 9 stores) have no idea when they will have the Sprint version in. They can't even
order it. GF had to walk into an Apple store in order to buy one. Even Sprint's own site is backlogged, the 2 Sprint stores we checked claimed they could order us one - but the wait time was 5-7 Business days.
Lets just hope those of us that preordered will indeed get it in a timely manner, or by Christmas.
Interestingly, I just chatted with an Amazon rep. She said these are now in a backordered status, and so she change my shipping to overnight for free (Amazon rocks!). However, I also now have an actual expected ship date. January 5th, 2012. Argh! Didn't Asus under manufacture the last Transformer tablet? I ordered this thing last night, and it's already in to next year before shipping? I'm not happy but I guess I can't do much about it.
