Oreo coming out and we don't even have Nougat yet?

Definitely recommend next time going with an OEM that is guaranteeing timely updates. Sorry that Moto ducked and ran. :(

So basically get a Pixel or Nexus, or suck it up and expect nothing. :)

Or expect fast updates when the company uses it as part of their advertising when marketing the phone, and continues to "promise" updates and provide update lists that include the phone but never actually update it....*cough* *cough*

Moto has been incredibly misleading about this whole ordeal.

Regardless, with this and what they put out recently, Moto isn't really appealing anymore to me

Well pretty much but I was trying to be nicer lol. I used to love moto
I still like Moto DEVICES, but not Lenovo as a company...

I should clarify, I still like budget Moto devices, the sub-$300 category. Motonova lost their way on anything much pricier. Not that they are bad devices, I just don't like the direction Moto is going with them.

Don't get me wrong, I am more than tad irate we are not getting out timely updates like promised, but Gen 4 and newer device are getting much better updates more quickly than many many manufacturer's devices. It isn't forgiveness, but I can see the issues coming from 20+ years in the technology and telecom business and moving around companies a few times, so I have some understanding.

My problem is there just isn't anything in that $300-$450 range that is truly upper mid-tier and holds to the pure, or mostly pure, Android style with few exceptions like the Axon 7 (which is now rather dated, I'm frankly surprised the Axon 8 hasn't been announced yet).

And yes, I feel a bit betrayed by Moto, but it's kind of like Ford or Chevy, people forgave them for the Pinto and the Vega... eventually :) And you can't deny devices like the Moto G5 Plus or Moto E4 are good devices for the investment (personally, I still don't quite get the Z line, makes me shake my head and ask WTF are you thinking Lenovo).

I'm a bit mixed on Moto today, can you tell?

They make medication for this.... Ok, it's really just beer and Benadryl, but it helps?

They use the "draw" of the new shiny os to get folks to pay the stupid high prices for the latest and greatest phones. They work us physcologically to drain our wallets and we let them.

Do the majority of us really need nougat or oreo? Would we even use the new features? Most folks don't use all the features of mm. I'm fine with mm on my phone... I plan on keeping it till it dies, which looks like a long time from now the way it's holding up so far.

Then when I purchase my next phone I'll get a refined version of oreo or more likely p on a reasonably priced mid-ranger and won't worry again for another 3 or 4 years.

These companies work on impatience.....if you relax, stay patient and don't play their games they lose and you win ;-)

Now it looks like we're completely screwed (from Motorola website). Might be time to jump ship.

MOTO X (2nd Gen.)

This device will be upgraded to the Android 6 (Marshmallow) release of Android, pending partner support.

Do you have the latest Motorola software? Find out.

Security updates

This product will no longer receive security updates.

Users on KitKat 4.4.4 or later OS versions can find their Android security patch level in Settings ->About Phone -> Android security patch level

Except out device is the Moto X Pure, which is a 3rd Generation device, not 2nd gen, you are looking at the wrong device.

Ours says "This device will be upgraded to the Android 7 (Nougat) release, pending partner support." and "This product is scheduled to continue to receive security updates."

Like promised?

Like promised?
Yeah... I get it, but did they really promise, or is that everyone wants to believe? What EXACTLY did they promise, not what people assume that meant or for how long.

They did say "quick updates" and did that happen? Well, for a little while it did.

Lenovo clearly dumped on the 2015 and prior models, the 2016 models were much better supported, and the current 2017 models seem to be treated very well although Lenovo has made great effort not to "promise" anything.

Anyway, I got tired of this device... the update thing was annoying but honestly not that big of a deal to me, but I just couldn't deal with the battery life anymore so today I picked up a Moto G5 Plus 4/64GB model at Best Buy for $210 (sale+10% coupon+reward certificates) and so far I am extremely happy. Performance is almost identical maybe a bit better, except no noticeable heating at all, and GSAM Battery monitor is estimating 7h 55m of screen on time compared to my MXPE's average of 2h 45m, and it is on the May 2017 security update (not great, but acceptable in my book)

"Do the majority of us really need nougat or oreo? Would we even use the new features?"

This is the old "you should be happy with what you have" excuse. Sorry, it doesn't cut it. You can buy a laptop for less than many smartphones today and you'll get Windows updates for years. I have an old Lenovo X220 that still got updated all the way to the latest Windows 10 version for free.

Yes, you need the new updates...and you also need the security patches Motorola isn't giving us. I've received only 2 since I've owned the Moto X PE. The last security update was December of 2016, coming on one year now. That is pathetic.

And by the way, I've been tracking this. Motorola promised us a Nougat update for July 2016. Then Fall 2016. Then by the end of the year. Then by the end of Q1 2017. Then by July 2017. They failed each time and now they just want us to forget.

Problem is, even if you bought, say, a brand-new G5 Plus, you get an outdated Android version (7.0), with no promise of any updates. Doubly pathetic.

"need"?
I NEED a battery that can easily be replaced because it lasts 2-3 hours after another annoying factory reset.
what *I* need is to always remember Motorola and Lenovo are 6 month (tops) phones before they're ready for replacement.

I did get Nougat today on my Moto XPE

I got the 10/17 system security patch this morning. I'm still showing 7.0

Was a quick download and install.

From Tech Radar:

Have a Moto phone? The company recently stated that it will start rolling out the update this autumn to the following phones: Moto Z, Moto Z Force, Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z Play, Moto Z2 Play, Moto G5, Moto G5S, Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S Plus, Moto X4 and Moto G4 Plus.

Previously, the company had promised to update the Moto G4 Plus to Android Oreo software, but made no mention of that handset - or the Moto G4 - in its announcement. While Moto has done right by changing its tune and adding support for the plus-sized budget G4, it appears that the regular G4, as well as the Moto G4 Play, will sit this one out.

From this, it appears, at least for now, there's no "plan" to include "X pure" into the equations.

That said, I have no plans to ditch my "X", she's still good to me...😎👍
