Just ordered the defender today for $35 with free shipping. Ive been looking at my buddies for a few weeks to see how he liked his. Well hes not selling his defender so I just had to get my own.

+1 on the commuter, though I also had the loose silicon issue after only a couple months.
I just emailed Otterbox consumer support yesterday and this morning got this reply (good to keep in mind if you ever have any such issue with any of their cases):
"This is covered under you warranty. With the commuter series, I cannot order only the silicone part, so I ordered a replacement case for you. You should receive that in 7-10 days. Thank you for choosing Otterbox!"

i've been thru 3 cases for my EVO and for some reason they just never lasted, i had the body guard-which i thought was a good brand and had for my blackberry, but that broke, i had 2 of the Seidio Innocase cases-and both broke. Now i have the Otterbox Impact Series Case and LOVE IT..i recommend this case.
So is the consensus here that the Defender is worth the money? I'm getting an Evo shortly, and I really want a case for it.
Defender is good, but big and bulky - I recommend the commuter series unless you just have to have a belt clip. The EVO is to big for me to carry on my hip our maybe I am just to fat

I love my otterbox, i dont like how my kick stand broke after the 2nd day i got it! That was a total bummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After using it for about 2 months, I say it's somewhat worth the money. I mean I have no doubts about it's protection. Not just from drops and bumps, but from dust too.
The only thing that prevents me from saying it's absolutely worth the money is the kick stand. I have never dropped the phone once these last two months and it's already broken twice. Both times they sent me a new case, but what's the point if it'll just break again?
I barely even use the kick stand so maybe I can ignore it, but it's crazy that I paid that much for a case only to have it break so easily.
When I emailed Otterbox support I mentioned this to them, but as expected they just ignored that part. I say if you are still thinking of an otterbox case get the commuter unless you really need that much protection.

Maybe when my warranty runs out I'll look at the commuter case.

After using my defender for a month I've decided to take it back. It's good protection, but its bulky, it is constantly getting dust in the case so it constantly needs to be cleaned. I can't get to some things on the sides of the screen to tap on because of the way the thing is made. I've got a dirty job and no matter how much I wash my hands or use hand sanitizer, the screen on the case is always smeared. I'm going back to a naked phone and carrying it in the HTC leather belt case. I also noticed that I can't type as well with the case on. The screen on the phone with a screen saver is a lot easer to keep clean. The reflection off of the screen on the case is also really bad.

Oh, I can't stand belt clips. Put it in my pocket and I'm good. The biggest thing that worried me was the built in screen protector that the Defender has is something the Commuter lacks. And I am not using those crappy static cling-ons.
But the Commuter looks like it has a small lip in front of the screen, which will help in case I drop it. Because, built in screen protector or no, if you drop that thing on something sharp or angled, nothing will protect that screen.
