Over clocking and the Moto Droid

Hi everyone, Im new to the android world, and had a couple of questions regarding overclocking..a moto droid.

1. knowing that overclocking is going to shorten cpu life and drain the battery a whole lot quicker.. at what signs should you be aware of? (force closing apps, hot to the touch, reaching a certain temperature?)

2. Ive read that 800mhz is regarded as a safe or stable oc. what kind of temperature ranges or ideal temperature ranges should you keep in mind?

I am running mine at 900mhz and have yet to notice a negative affect due to it.

my temp monitor always shows mid 80's, anything above that id be slightly alarmed, push upper 90's and theres an issue.
