Overheating an GPS issues...

I just recently bought this phone to replace my Galaxy Note 2 and for the most part love it. I don't miss the S pen
one bit, and will use this phone exclusively until they announce the Galaxy Note 3. There are many things to love about this phone, but the two things that bother me the most is the GPS is useless indoors constantly giving me the "unable to find your location" message in multiple apps, and that it is constantly dimming from max brightness down due to overheating. I know a lot of people don't use their phones at max brightness all the time, but with a screen like this it is hard not to! And if you use a power hungry game, it gets hot even quicker. I know it is done as a safety precaution, but it still stinks. Other than that I'm pretty happy with my decision and can live with the compromise for now, especially when I pick up my note 2and look at the screen. It's just no contest!

Exchange for another one if you still can. My first one got warm when using and my second one does not get warm with the same kind of usage. I also never received the "unable to find your location" message with phone so far so maybe a new one can fix this issue for you too.

With the location message, I turned on wifi/mobile network location and it didn't work for me. I turned it back off, went into Google maps, maps asked me to turn it on, I did, and now it works perfectly.

Apparently you have to let the phone think it came up with the idea..

Yeah, the GPS issue seems to have resolved itself. Although certain apps give me a hard time here and there and may just be the app themselves, but maps (which is most important to me) locks me at all times.

Although, I have begun to accept that the overheating is just part of the phone and now that I've accepted it, it doesn't bother me as much. I did trade it in for another hoping that the issue was device related, but every time I run graphic rich games, or have multiple app store updates going while multitasking, or run the phone for a while while charging, it will automatically dim. The most it will go down is 74%, but when it gets that low, it takes a while to cool off to be able to jack back up to full brightness. I even ran the floor model at ATT through the ringer just to make sure, and sure enough, same issue. But again, now that I'm aware, it bothers me less. The trade off is worth it. It's crazy how over saturated and dark my note 2 looks now when I pick it up, especially since I was enamored with its screen when I first got it. I'm officially spoiled by this screen!

Funny thing is, I play Ingress a lot on mine, and I've occasionally noticed it getting a tad warm but nothing like my old Thunderbolt. And Ingress is pretty resource-intensive. I've never actually noticed it dimming the screen, even in full daylight. That's with the mobile radio, GPS, and screen all on constantly and rendering a pretty "heavy" UI.

However, I don't believe it exercises the 3D chipset a lot, so maybe that's it.

Note for anyone experiencing the "WiFi location does not work" issue (you can only get geolocated when you have a solid GPS lock, not using WiFi access points or cell triangulation).

I have had to factory reset a couple of times in a fruitless effort to get the Value Pack upgrade. What I've discovered is that the Google Terms of Service message doesn't always come up, and without the ability to hit AGREE, WiFi location gets turned back off.

Here's what I've found works. It's clumsy, and maybe there's a better way, but...

1. Go into location access (Settings / General / Location Access)
2. Check both GPS (which should already be checked) and "Wi-Fi & mobile..."
3. You SHOULD see a "terms of service" window with a "decline and agree". If you do, you're probably OK. If you don't, restart the phone (long-press power button, select "power down and restart", follow the happy prompts"), then go back to Step 1.

After a restart, I've invariably found that the Terms of Service window comes up, I can select AGREE, and Wi-Fi geolocation works fine.
