I'm a long time Nexus user thinking about giving the Oneplus 5 a whirl. Is there anyone who has used both a Oneplus 5 and a Pixel and can compare the user experience between the two? I've read a lot about the customizations that are possible on the 1+5, so the Oxygen OS seems to be a pretty good selling point.

What do you think?

[Edit: I meant Nougat, duh]

If your comparison point is Lollipop, either is going to be a fair change - I think for the better. If you want a real google experience with upgrades coming quickly, stick to the Pixel. If you are looking for a better price and can live with less in the way of updates, go with One+

Just to check, you do know the pixel doesn't run lollipop, yes?

God lollipop was horrible... Pushed me away from the Nexus line!

I had a Nexus 6P running Nougat along with the O beta. I love all the additional tweaks that Oxygen OS adds while still staying close to the Nexus/Pixel experience. I wouldn't want to go back now.

Yeah.

Brain fart so hard it left skid marks lol.

I meant Nougat.

In that case, the UX is very similar, but the Oneplus 5 is more customisable and a bit more feature rich without being invasively so.

Pretty much all of the customisations are optional and you can set it up to be almost identical to Google's version of android. The only glaring change that comes to mind is that because of the alert slider, do not disturb works a little differently in that you can't set it on a timer.

Isn't Oxygen just a "covered up" version of Android ?

It looks like it's doing stuff at the hardware level that puts it beyond AOSP, like night mode.

Also, I'd like to try out dark mode and icon packs with this system. It looks like the UI is designed to suit themers.

It is not a layer on top of stock Android, it is Android improved. They have taken the open source Android and tweaked it.

It is just a edited version of android, designed to add some extra features or play with some that stock android provides.

If you want google experiance and supports go with pixel. IF you want better performance camera and customizable os go with one plus

Oxygen os is just a slightly improved version on nougat. If you are looking for features, oxygen is the way to go

I like Oxygen OS. Basically a Nougat version with UI improvements. Way to go OnePlus! I'm looking forward to see when/how will be ported Android 8 that is around the corner.

Oxygen OS is basically derived from AOSP (Android Open Source Project), the same that the OS on the pixel uses as its base.
It is less themed than most, doing very little to the look of Android while adding in some customisation options along the lines of gestures, the shelf, colour choices and sizing.
It is actually a trend a lot more are now following, and arguable who really inspired it - google or OnePlus, but it is a good trend regardless.
Samsung and HTC (I think) in particular are now going for UI's far nearer "stock".
Focus more on useful extras instead of the signature UI look.
