[Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Removed.

The part that gets me is that not everyone is having problems

I know, it's frustrating. You'd think if it really IS the radio, that it would affect all. On the other hand, if it is NOT the radio, you'd only see the usual percentage of random issues from bad downloads, bad flashes, etc, not all these cell related reboots.

That reminds me: I wanted to compare MD5 of my VMU update.zip with some who've had no problems. Since VMU doesn't show checksums on their website, there was no way to verify the download. I no longer have it on my SD card, but will update this post with my MD5 when I get back to my PC.

Thanks :)

Re: [Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Restored!

Dannemand: Maybe one of us can try re-flashing the full update and running stock. I haven't had any issues today really though, so I'd rather not go through it unless it happens again or gets worse.

Maybe something to consider: are you using the stock messaging app? I'm using GoSMS and have never stopped.

I flashed iho recovery then radio update and flashed touch recovery back, no problems here. Currently running interactive x min-480 max-825:)

Yeah I use stock messaging. The fact that we got reboots in two different SMS apps is another sign.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll try some things. First do a fresh install of MiRaGe and see if I can even reproduce the issue. If not, that would close the case for me: Either it was a bad nandroid backup/restore OR some system data needs to be rebuild with ZV9 running, and restoring old ones is the culprit. The fact that several have tried fresh installs already AND that updating stock-to-stock (without wiping old data) is the official VMU route, indicates to me that this probably won't help -- but it would be great if it does.

Next I'll try the full update.zip again (twice) AND restore my previous nandroid again (the one I last restored). Of course Gordita exploit and all in between. I'll probably also try to rewrite my current PRL 60686. Only if those all fail will I try running stock for awhile (Drezliok suggsted that too). Of course I prefer to avoid that :D

My goal tomorrow will be to reproduce and locate the problem -- more than just to get a stable phone. Any input fom others greatly appreciated!

Re: [Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Restored!

For those who just joined and may be wondering:

Simply flashing the radio-only update posted by LeslieAnn in the OP is not what's causing the reboot issue that some of us are discussing. But because there are signs that maybe those simple flashes don't really update the radio after all (though they have no harmful effect either) some of us have taken the route of running the full VMU update and re-rooting our phones. And that's where some -- but NOT all -- have seen reboot issues after going back to IHO.

As long as you avoid Touch and Multi-ROM recoveries, there is no indication that flashing LeslieAnn's radio-only update should cause any bad effects.

Seemingly no issues here doing the full update path and restoring a nandroid of Harmonia 2.03. But comparing 2 OV phones side by side for a weekend, ZV4 vs. ZV9, in a low signal area (-96 to -100 dBm) shows no apparent improvement in the ZV9's radio performance. I wonder if others have seen a tangible improvement outside of regular variance.

Mine still shows low signal but when I make a call it sounds a little clearer so any gain is a plus I guess.

I haven't really. I thought I had, but further testing shows the same signal I've always had. To be fair though, NOBODY around my area has decent coverage.

Re: [Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Restored!

I can now say that flashing the radio by itself will not update the radio. I spent the weekend investigating the recovery code, and found that the radio is installed by the firmware during reboot after flashing the full update. Just flashing the radio will not work, regardless of which recovery you are using (even stock).

For those interested, check the source code for
/bootable/recovery/recovery.c
/bootable/recovery/install.c
/bootable/recovery/firmware.c

There is the possiblity VM/LGE has added some extra device specific code, though it doesn't "look" that way.

The only way to flash the radio is to flash the full VM security update twice, with a factory reset in between flashes. ;)

Re: [Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Restored!

I want to add to my post, company showed up while I was typing.

On my sgs4g some of us are having issues with reboots. One user narrowed it to possibly a issue with the various radios. This weekend one user had multiple reboots while driving to vegas from cali. What we have concluded is it could be caused by low signal. He is going to get some logcats on his return trip so it can be looked at.

So if the new radio is being extremely finicky with actual signal that could be cashing the reboots. So what is being suggested in people testing the stock updated rom for a few days is on the right track. What could be happening is a conflict between the zv9 update and the prior updates/firmware.

What happens if you didn't do a factory reset in between flashes?

It will hang and you will need to pull the battery and do a reset. Atleast that is what I experienced and some others have stated.

after reading all these issues,im glad just flashing it to iho doesn't work. i want no part of this "update"

Actually the update isn't all bad. EarthnFire78 is rebuilding his froyo Rom off the update and I'm rebuilding bumblebee using the update. Its not totally bad. Once you remove recovery, change out the kernel, add superuser, and deodex the apps, it turns into a decently smooth rom. I'm actually running stock froyo with the bobzhome iho kernel right now.

To those "scared" to flash, or discounting the update all together:

Don't flash it if you have no reason to. If you see good reception and you are happy with your data speeds, there is really no real reason to upgrade.

If you have spotty reception, and slow data, however, I'd say go for it, or at least wait until these random reboot issues have been nailed down. Keep checking the thread for progress. I've had a few (less than 5 total) random reboots and have had full days with no issues. It greatly improved my data speeds and reception overall.

Re: [Patch] Virgin Mobile VM9 Radio Update - Restored!

For now I'm holding off on working on my Froyo ROM, because I'm working on a project to make ROM editing easier for people that are a afraid of Linux, and I'm rebuilding IHO OM ROM from the ground up.

Did work with Anthony on Bumblebee over the weekend, there are a few more things to work on with this update, but as it stands it is a pretty fast ROM, maybe even faster then it was last year.

So I would have to re-do everything to get this?, Root, flash new rom, recovery, etc? My phone works just fine the way it is and is super fast, I think ill stick with what I've got. Thanks anyways Leslie ann:)

Yes you would. The update flashes a radio, a new recovery, a new kernel, and new everything else.
