Can?t say as I?ve really looked at the difference between this type of display and say, the Dinc2 (which I would put as a good reference for what a 4? display should look like.)

Any thoughts?

I would look at an Atrix if you can. That is the exact same screen that will be in the Droid 3, at least from what was released about its cousin the Milestone 3. I did not think that the screen looked that bad when I messed around with my brother's Atrix but who knows. I am waiting for the reviews to come in and until I play with one myself I am trying not to pass judgment yet.

I'm really not as concerned about the screen as I am the ram...if the Milestone3's specs are the same...512MB RAM? Really? :-/

a DDR2 512MB ram , which supposed to be twice as fast

That is also a good thing. I wonder how much that will help with memory management. I think that we all agree that more RAM is always a good thing, but at least with faster memory that should help out.

pentile screen

I have an Atrix and a DX2. There is nothing wrong with the displays. I also have a Samsung Epic 4g and a Samsung galaxy s2 that are the 2 most beautiful screens I have seen. I really don't think the screen will be an issue. I am a little concerned on the 512 ram. With it being DDR2 this will help tremendously. This is the same setup as the LG 3D phone which has received very good reviews so I feel this may b e way better than expected.

I have not encountered any memory issues also I agree about the screen it is not the super AMOLED plus but it looks good.

Even with the pentile screen I am still looking forward to this and the Bionic, if it has that screen too. I am leaving my judgment until I see the reviews and can use one for myself. Should be interesting to see how well the general public takes to these devices.

You can notice the PenTile displays when you move the phone. Try moving it around as you stair at it and the pixels literally jump out at you. It's HORRIBLE.

I am not sure why Motorola is using this inferior display technology except for maybe battery life and cheaper costs to make the display? I wont get another Moto phone as long as they are pentile displays.

(I have an Atrix, but it was given to me free)

I'm a little nervous for the Bionic if it has pentile tech... I like my D3 screen a lot, but it does look a little pixelly. Add another half an inch... well, it could be kinda ugly.

The battery life, on the other hand, might take a bashing from a 4.5" display, so pentile is a good choice in that regard.

if you do some searching you will find that a lot of people are very unhappy with their DX2 display's. the d3 is the same type, however there seems to be a few tweaks, and given the smaller screen the effects are not so bad.

on my d3 i've noticed a very pixelated effect when there are solid, bright colors (battery indicator is a good example), or some fine lines. also, scrolling text can have very bad ghosting effects - scrolling through text conversations does not look very good.

overall thought i would consider the screen as good. yes there are some drawbacks, but with the size of the screen most of the time this is not noticeable. i think the pros of the phone definitely outweigh the cons of the screen. if you don't care about a keyboard though, make sure to check out the screen in person and compare it with other screens before you buy

How much effect does the pixelation and ghosting have on FPS-style games (Nova, for example)? Is it noticeable?

The screen is horribly pixelated. I had a Dinc2, and before that an iPhone 4, both of those displays are crisp and clear. The D3, I see nothing but pixels. The bright side is it uses so much less battery life. Ive never had an Android phone that didnt have Display at the top of the Battery Usage screen, until the D3.

I can live with it, its not a deal breaker for me, but it is bad.

It's kind of funny. Yes you can see "the pixels" but comparing it side by side with the lower density screen on my transformer tablet (the one with the IPS screen everyone raves about) and they look very similar.

Also, fwiw I played NOVA for a couple seconds and it looked fine.

I will say the screen on the Dinc2 does look great though.

The Pentile display is too pixelated IMHO. Looking at the D3 and DX2 vs. the iPhone 4 and my DX at the Verizon kiosk and the difference was very noticeable. Live wallpaper with the swaying grass looks like an absolute pixelated mess on the Pentile displays. On the DX, Charge, TBolt, Revo it is crisp and smooth ,, I dunno what Moto was thinking. If Bionic has this display I think I will pass :(

My wife now has the D3 and I have been playing with it at home ... Its usable I suppose, just not what you would expect from a supposed high end smartphone.

Seriously, with this??

How friggin close are you guys holding the phone from your noses, 1.3 millimeters?

Give me a break.

I came to the D3 from the DX. Sure, this pentile screen isn't as good as the DXs was but to say its "TERRIBLE" and "unusable" proves to me that Im right: no matter how a device is spec'd, there will always be a certain percentage of dbags complaining about the most trivial things.

Folks, if you're considering the Droid 3 just go to a VZW store and look for yourselves. Can I see the pixels? Sure, when I hold it right to to my nose. So, if that's the position you hold the phone in when you use it, you should probably be looking for corrective lenses instead of a better screen.

Gimme a break...sheesh!
