Open BBM
Go to "Me" at the bottom right
Select Notifications
Uncheck BBM Connection Icon
Keep notifications On

Someone told me that delays incoming messages

As far as I can recall, the icon is there to let you know that it's connected to BBM services. You're connected to them whether it shows or not. You just won't know that your NOT connected to them if you turn off the persistent icon. If you leave it on, and you are not connected to BBM services, the icon won't show up in your notification bar. It has no actual bearing or control to how the services work. It's just there to let you know why your messages are delayed if you haven't gotten any... and the reason would be because you're not connected to the services at that time, not because it's not checked.

The description itself says:
When you turn off the BBM Connected icon, BBM messages might not be delivered or delivery might be delayed if you device memory is low.
