Personal Text Alerts

Set a tone for my wife different from the standard text alert message. We text and I hear her tone. I close the discussion and it reverts back to the standard/default. I even changed it via Zedge. It will not remember the personal tone.

Samsung says its an android issue and a fix is coming.

How did you set a custom text alert? IIRC Samsung removed the ability to do so in the Oreo update and people had to look into 3rd party texting apps that supported the feature.

Actually its there, you have to look for it a bit.

Create a text to anyone, do not send it.

Click on the menu, 3 dots.

Choose People and Options

Choose Notifications

The tone is listed under Sound. You can change it there.

I also set it up through Zedge.

Both ways change the tone, this issue is once you close out that session it reverts back to the default sound.

Samsung tells me that its coming in the next release.

Ah! Unlocked phone, I assume? Not there for Verizon or T-Mobile versions. And I think an ATT user on the forums posted that they couldn't either, so maybe this is just in the non-carrier version.

Unfortunately, eidsonb's solution isn't available on my T-Mobile GS9.

So yes, for my phone that works once. You keep the conversation open and the tone sticks. You close the conversation and it reverts back to the default text tone. I have been in chat sessions with Samsung twice over this and they say its coming. I just want to know when my wife or a kid sends me a text.

I'd suggest to use a different messaging app then, at least while Samsung fixes the unlocked version. Textra supports thread-specific ringtones.
