Phone App doesn't let you sort contacts YOUR way

[Android Central Question]

Hello, my context:
"Galaxy Prime 3" handset bought Dec 2018, model SM-J337A
Android v. 9

I'm used to my contacts sorted by Last Name, and that's how I configured my copy of Google Contacts on the phone. But the actual phone APP's settings seem to have no way to do that, so I'm left with sort by First name.

I'd appreciate any help on this. Maybe I need to disable the built-in phone app and install one more to my liking. Thanks.

In your contact app under settings you choose Google account ?

Welcome to Android Central! I don't have that phone, so I can't say for sure -- but in my Pixel 3 XL (with Google's Phone app), if I go to the Contacts tab of the Phone app and tap the Menu button at the upper right, then Settings>Display Options, I get an option for sorting. You don't have that?

This the setting in contact apps if u don't choose Google account it will keep them unorganized

My apologies for the LONG delay in responding. Thought I had asked for notifications on replies...
It's likely that I'm not using Google's phone app but rather Samsung's. The "About Phone" says Version 10.1.02.27 and Call version 10.1.11.24 But...the phone's contacts are for sure my Google contacts, yet there's no way to adjust the sort-by. Not able to attach screenshots.
Would certainly try Google's phone app but dunno if Samsung prevents it. Thanks for your efforts to help me.
