Phone Arena: Moto X (second generation) Review

To each his own, but I got a 64g, top spec, premium device delivered to my home for $364.00 tax included. All I had to do was make one post in the forums and the invite showed up in my inbox.

Exactly. I made one post and reviewed an invite then I received three more to share.

I was making a logical, and as yet unrefuted, argument as to why the phone is priced wrong compared to its peers.

I love it when someone is so blinded by brand loyalty they feel the need to attack others to validate their choice.

But Citizen Coyote replied with useful software features that are in the second generation Moto X. It's not just about the hardware specs. Motorola's software features are touted as value adds to Android.

All those features can be added via 3rd part apps for WAY less than the additional cost of the X verses the competition. Apps like Dynamic Notifications offer many of the same features.

Moto Display is also present as the second generation of Active Display, and is now proximity based along with motion-based actions, which works by using the three IR transmitters and one IR receiver. This continues to use a low power DSP that is likely another TI solution. Motorola demonstrated how their solution is an order of magnitude lower in power compared to the same functionality implemented by a Play Store app for phones that lack Moto Display/Active Display. This was done wiring up a second gen Moto X and competing device to a power monitor.

So? Obviously, Motorola had to cook it b/c they put such a small battery in there relative to the competition. Even by cooking it the X 2014 appears to be a 9-5 kinda phone with additional charging needed to make it thru the night.

It's a non-issue on phones with bigger batteries. You kinda made my point by pointing out the features are available elsewhere....

Look what can be had for LESS money than an X 2014.

eBay has a pretty nice deal on the unlocked LG G3. They have the 2GB/16GB version going for $479, and the 3GB/32GB version is going for $589. Now these are both the unlocked D855 model and will work on both AT&T and T-Mobile here in the US. The LG G3 also features a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 resolution IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 13MP camera with laser auto-focus and OIS+, as well as a 2MP front-facing camera and a 3000mAh battery inside.

The loads of reasons why people will buy the Moto X are the same reasons why they WON'T buy the LG G3

Exactly. My wife has a G3 and she does not like my phone and vise versa.

And for Mdbils484's comment, the G3 has had some sales and price drops since it's release. And I won't go into how the G3 'lags' and it's overall performance is sluggish on everyday use and that her phone doesn't last all day... Ooops, I did. While I'm at, the G3 does not last all day and into the night. I've seen it. It's actually only an little better than her old iPhone 4S. So again, a 3000mAh battery means crap.

It's already been pointed out why eBay prices are irrelevant.

Motorola's software features are part of the value. It's not specs for the sake of specs. Not sure if you'll ever understand that.

And to a small segment of the market, you would be correct. HOWEVER, very few X 2013's were sold so I would've have thought Motorola would have been more aggressive in pricing to try and rescue itself from oblivion in terms of market share.

Not refuted only if you ignore everything I said. Also, given that the X isn't even out yet, comparing its price to eBay prices (lol) of phones that have been out for months is disingenuous.

I'd like to see the OnePlus One wake up simply by talking to it.

well just think how many they could have sold if they just offered them for sale on there web site. I agree its a good price for a good phone but theres nothing about it that's good enough to warrant jumping through a hoop.

How much do I have to pay not to use LG's terrible skin?

Price wasn't the reason for the Moto X 2013 lack of commercial success. I think the "specs" and screen size had more to do with it. The new model matches up to the competition and doesn't come with a terrible skin. Also can be purchased bloatware free for less than $500.

Do you have any evidence to back that up or is it just your opinion? Either way is good, just asking.

I spent a bit of time with it in the store, the UI is horrific, I think even worse than Samsung. The icons design are just so ugly and the organization is all over the place, it look like they just did everything to copy Samsung. I had to switch the phone to ART, lowered the animation and install google launcher on it, it doesn't feel fast for its hardware specs compared to my OnePlus which is blazing in comparison. The notification menu is a mess. When the interface experience is just so bad, it's really difficult to enjoy it even with all the other high end hardware included. Also they oversharpen the screen so everything have this artificial sharpening look which ruin the display, it's not even good to look at because of that.

I get a bit sadface when most of the customers I see immediately goes to the S5 for their plan upgrade and not even glancing at the M8. It's like they don't even notice the difference between a metal and plastic phone. The M8 is probably the only non-stock UI phone I can tolerate.

Bottom line, some people like these things, some people like those different things. Everyone should be able to buy the inanimate object they want without being criticized for it.
