Phone disconnects on Firmware Upgrade

Hi team, I'm in Australia. I plugged into Kies last night to transfer some stuff from my laptop onto my phone and was alerted to an available firmware upgrade. So I tried it about 3 times but each time it eventually stated that my phone and laptop were not connected. They were to start with obviously for Kies to identify an update was available but as soon as I pressed for the upgrade to occur I did notice that Kies stated "please connect a device" in the top left corner where it usually states the phone that is connected, as soon as the process started. So it goes through the whole process of downloading etc and then my phone eventually goes to the screen where the lil android guy shows and it says please do not disconnnnect target, but my laptop eventually states that the phone is not connected and that's about the end of it. Any ideas?

It says PC failed to recognise device!! Can't understand how that'd be the case ...
