My phone freezes up frequently, like once a day ...or less. And I have to do battery pull. Is there another way to do a soft reboot without doing the battery pull when the phone freezes?

Sometimes it happens when I am driving and my phone is plugged into the car charger. But usually it unfreezes onces I unplug the charger (from the phone, not from the car).

To answer your reboot question -- unfortunately no. If the phone completely locks up to the point where the power button is unresponsive, removing the battery is the only option really.

As for your freeze-ups, are you rooted? Are you running stock or some sort of custom ROM?

I should have mentioned this in my original post, sorry.

Yes, I'm running DJ05 with Super Dark ROM and stupid fast kernel (i forgot which version but it is the one for dj05)

Two out of three times freezes are usually cause by an app, task killer, or rooting. Check to see which one is causing the problem. Phones occasionally freezes and become unresponsive thus needing to remove the battery... The phone should restart itself after a while - but the time on that vary. (A battery pull usually refresh the system hence.. making the phone feel a lot snappy.)

Rooting rarely, if ever, is the reason for poor system performance or lock-ups.

On the other hand, applications are a frequent culprit. Have you installed any new applications lately, and how long has this been going on? My first suggestion would be to try and back track. If this is something that's been happening recently, try uninstalling any applications you have installed in that time frame.

I install and uninstall apps quite frequently...on the average of three to five every week. That could be the reason. I will try to uninstall all the apps that I don't use. This has been going on for a while.

Usually it seems to happen when a notification tried to come through when the phone its trying to do something else at the same time, like when the navigation is giving me voice directions. This not always the case though.

It is not always the case though. Like I mentioned earlier, the phone unfeezes when I unplug the charger from the micro usb port. Or if I leave it alone it unfreezes after about ten to fifteen minutes.

Also I sometimes get force close notification just before it freezes.... Usually it is about the settings process force close.

i have noticed the task killer being a problem. if its an auto task killer and kills the wrong app, like say your launcher, well your phone will lock up. its best not to run task killers

I noticed that you can hold the power and volume down buttons to do a force restart....Try that next time and see if it works.

yea i had this problem when i installed setcpu and set my screen off at 400 hi 200 low always made my phone freeze. had to move it up just a little and took care of the problem.

i've been having the freeze problem lately too, usually at night whilst the phone is charging in the Samsung desk dock. i say usually because it has frozen up a couple of other times when not docked.

i was on the sf 1.5.4 kernel for a while until the freeze ups started happening. i first tried using a rom backup from a few weeks past (same rom/kernel) but that didnt solve the problem.

i decided to try switching kernels next - i've been using the jt nv 12/30 kernel since Sat and so far so good.

just curious - anybody know if android has some kind of changelog file that gets created when apps are installed or other changes? similar to Event Log in Windows? or maybe there's an app with that kind of functionality? something like that could be useful when troubleshooting. i know about catlog but my understanding is that can only be used to capture realtime events that can be recreated, which doesn't help when you have intermittent freeze ups. i'm assuming if i tried running catlog and then just left it running while waiting for a freeze to happen, the file would eventually get rather big and causes problems, right?

in adb, you can get a dmesg.txt. check out the thread phone shows up as cd rom. the last couple will give the commands.
