Phone Getting Hot & Draining Fast

So this isn't a battery life issue, it's happened before, let me explain.

So sometimes when I turn on my phone from school and I just use it for the rest of the day, sometimes I notice it gets very hot and the battery drains super quick when this is the case. It is running at 95 F to 100 F and it's been idle the whole time only a 30 second phone call and 1 email.

I unplugged at 8:26 P.M. it's 11:18 P.M. and battery is at 47.

I just want to know why it's so damn hot sometimes.

If it ever gets that hot I would pull it out and sit it in front of a fan to cool it down. Not only will the battery drain quicker, it could go into meltdown and blow up on you.

Hmmm...there are only a handful of reasons as to why a phone would get so hot...

First, something is running the processor to the max without your knowledge, and over time, that will heat it up.

Or, your battery may in fact be defective, but it doesnt seem like a constant issue, so this might not be it either.

Is your phone overclocked by chance?

Probably a rogue app. I installed system panel and saw that my phone randomly pegs the cpu meter at 100%.

Haven't figured out which app it is yet. It's under "Android System".

Nope, and I know it's not a defective battery, cause my battery life is great when this isn't happening.

Woah, just as I finished typing this I unpplugged my phone and it read 32 F then it spiked to 95 F and it does really feel like 95 F .. Feeling worried here

I don't haev task killer, and when I touch android system a bunch of stuff pops up do I name them ? But it's only taking 8%.

Overclocking a thunderbolt? That seems fun ! But I don't have it overclocked atm.

how is your signal strength? Are you in a 4 G area? what else is enabled on the phone? hotspot? gps? it could also be app running in the background...

No Gps. How do I check if app is running in background? It just drpped to 87..

The same thing happens to me but I have only noticed it in 4g.My guess is its the radio since it also uses more battery according to the htc battery info.

Unless you had your phone in the freezer, I suspect 32F is really 32C, which is about 90F. So 90F to 95F isn't that big a spike, and if you keep your phone in your pocket (i.e. warmed by body heat) that would account for those temperature levels (my in-pocket temps are in the mid-80s). That said, the fact that your battery is draining suggests, as others have noted, that something is running in the background. My experience is that when I go into a weaker signal area, the phone boosts power to the radio, which makes the phone run warmer and drain the battery faster. I don't believe temps <100F under load are a major cause for concern, though.

Okay I see that the icons all have a grey bar on the side nothing is like being used.

cpu is at 13% spiking to 90%

That's very hot (over 125 degrees Fahrenheit). Just to be clear, were you playing any games? Are you overclocking your CPU? Is your signal strength good, or are you bouncing bbetween 1X, 3G, and 4G? Are you rooted and, if so, did you flash any new ROMs or kernels? (If you don't know.what.I'm.talking about, you're not rooted and not overclocking.)

Sometimes rebooting (long-pressing the power button and choosing Restart) can help -- removes programs that were running in the background.

Another question for Iceycold, are you running "Exchange/ActiveSync"? Do you see the ActiveSync circle in the status bar often?

I've seen this Activesync operation get "stuck" on constant syncing, which makes the phone hot and drains the battery. I'm setup with Exchange/ActiveSync with Google Gmail - may be an idiosyncrasy (no pun intended ) with Googles'/Gmail's implementation of Microsoft's Activesync.

I wouldn't be worried unless it hits 50C. Up to 45C is completely normal for how much power smart phones draw.

45C = 113F
50C = 122F
