My S4 has suddenly started losing a charge at lightning speed. It's been doing good lately, but since this past weekend it's dropped like an anchor. I don't have any apps open, and I reduced the screen light - but no change. I wonder if an update changed something? Or if I have a lot of things somewhere running in the background? Has anyone else seen any change recently?

Hi

Enter safe mode for a while, see if that helps. If it does, then its perhaps a rogue app. You'd need to post a screen shot of your battery usage for us to see. Also, its more than likely, that your battery is just at the end of its usefulness.

Keep us posted.

The usual culprits causing a fast battery drain are, Apps running that are not closed. GPS apps such as mapping and finder apps. magnetic closure on case turning phone on when you are not using it, bad SD card and old battery. If the battery is over a year old it is suspect, 18 months tops! Weak WIFI signal or weak phone network signal.
Hold the HOME key a couple seconds and hit CLOSE ALL at the bottom right of screen!
Do a search in this forum for "battery" and you will find you are not the only person with this problem! Let us know what you find.

I have the same battery that was in my phone when I bought it - at the end of 2014. So I think that's the first thing I'll address.

How much are new batteries, btw? I have an S4.
