Phone Problems + Rooting Problems

I have the Sprint Hero and a few months ago the phone wouldn't boot past the HTC screen, so I updated the RUU to 2.1. Now the phone mostly works, however my screen looks like a slot machine scrolling continuously up and back up from the bottom. To add to that, if my phone goes standby, the screen will not display again, although buttons are still working cuz i can shut down the phone or make phone calls even tho the screen is blank (difficult to do as i have to memorize all operations). Im guessing the issues lye somewhere within the software since i dont get the slot machine effect when the phone boots and says "HTC Hero quietly brilliant". When i load the boot menu screen there are no images found, so i'm assuming residual information from 1.6 is messing up the 2.1 flash. I then attempted to root, but i'm having problems with it.

Firmware version
2.1 update 1
Build number
2.32.651.2 CL282911 release-keys
Software number

-Things you will need to complete the root process-
-If you download the app to your pc then get a file manager from the market to install the apk.

Downloaded Astro (free version)

- How To use-
-Download the app heroroot010.apk

Downloaded it to the PC. Here's where i may have messed up? I hooked my phone to my PC and put the heroroot010.apk file into the "Download" folder on my phone. From there i went into Astro, accessed the file, and chose "Install" which puts the app "Hero Rooter" on the phone.

1)Once app has ran it's course, reboot your phone.
After installing the app, i opened the app and chose "I agree, Root Me." which took a whole nanosecond to let it "run it's course"(should this take longer?) in which the "Reboot Please...[paragragh on reboot steps]" pops up.

2)When your phone has fully booted, power off again.
K, did this
3)This time hold,Home+power continue to hold until recovery pops up.
I've tried both holding Home+power and Holding volume down + power, then pressing Home button to boot in recovery and it gets stuck in the white HTC screen. I rip out the battery and try again with no luck. If i boot the phone normally, it's the 2.1 firmware w/ same screen issues. Occassionally, when booting while holding Home + power "Clear Data [yes/no]" comes up, and i've tried clearing it and redoing all the above steps with no luck.

4)In recovery, choose "flash zip from sdcard" choose "rootme.zip" When that's complete reboot. You should now have Super User app.
5)Now that you have root,go uninstall the apk you used to root.

cant do these since i cant get step 3 to work.

Any help or suggestions on the rooting process or my phone issue? Also, if i volume down + power HBOOT always does "SD card checking Loading....[HERCDIAG/3/2/AG/etc.zip] No Image!". Is there anyway to put an image to flash on the SD card manually via PC? Remember the phone is still on stock firmware.

Boot into fastboot, hold volume down+power on. From there try flashing the 2.1 RUU again and see if that fixes the problem. It may have gotten a bad flash the first time around.

Did that multiple times before and just tried it again, still with no luck. I tried rooting again w/ no luck as well. It doesn't seem like the phone is allowing an image to flash and i can't boot in recovery at all.
