When I turned it back on this am it showed 82%. How does a battery loose 10% when the phone is off? It couldn't use 10% just to fire it up could it? HJ

It could be any of several things. How long was your phone "off" because by default it does not actually turn off but goes to sleep and will continue to use a small amount of battery. It can however be set to actually turn off. Another possibility is you need reset the battery cache which is where the OS gets its info to share with you in the battery guage, this is true especially if you have flashed a custom ROM. And of course it could be your battery is getting old.

I shut it off..no custom rom and I use gauge battery widget..(power down) And how can a battery be old when the phone just came out last June? HJ

How do you know if it's turned OFF fully and not just sleeping??

If your phone starts in 15~20 seconds its sleeping, if it takes ~1:00+ its off.

A lot of charge/discharge cycles will wear out a battery quickly regardless of age. Also letting the phone battery run down to the point of the phone shutting off will adversely affect the battery.

The battery stats are not always fully correct, this is easily demonstrated the same way you discovered it,

I actually charge my phone let it hit 100%(green light) reboot it, normally drops down quite a bit. Plug it back in and wait for 100%(green light) again... I actually do this about monthly, seems to help my battery last longer, like its recieving an actual full charge. Could just be placebo effect. I haven't tested numbers..
