Phone slowing down, camera failures.

My phone seems to be getting slower and slower. My text message lists load very slowly (I constantly clean up by deleting them) when I type in a contacts name it takes up to 5 seconds to suggest a contact in the texting app (and I removed a TON of old contacts, and didn't speed it up). And it just seems to be slowing down all together in the UI.
Last night, I was attempting to take pictures and the camera app was pretty much freezing, and wouldn't take any pictures, or display any image, and the entire phone was basically locked up, only responding to each action 30 seconds late. I restarted the phone and was able to take pictures, but I'm worried. Is my phone defective? Will it get worse?

I don't think your phone is defective but it might need a factory reset, there might be an app causing the issue as well.

ahem... uh.... I'm pretty sure I have not, because I do not know how to or what that is. =]

Alrighty Daniel, lets see if I can guide you through this,

Do you know how to navigate into recovery?

Shut down the device.
Hold down Volume Down and hold down Power until you boot into the HBOOT menu.
Select the RECOVERY option using the Volume buttons.
Your phone will show the white HTC screen, then you'll see a black screen. It will take a while but it will say failed to mount sd four times. Wait until it turns into a red triangle with an exclamation point inside the triangle and from there, hold down the Volume Up and then press the Power button. You will see a small list, this is stock recovery.

From there, select wipe/ cache. No data will be lost.

Settings-Storage-Make more space
This will walk you through some steps to clean out unused/not needed files.

Hmmm... I'm really not sure what app would be doing it. I'm not using anything suspicious or power hungry. At least not that I know of.

So, I did this just now. It still seems to be slow. I'll do a factory reset later tonight.

Odd. Sucks that you have to reset to get your phone working correctly :-(

It does. This seems to be par for the course for the android phones I've had though. Maybe I'm crazy, maybe its just me, but when I get these phones they work great for the first couple months and then they start working slowly and having problems. This was the main reason for me rooting my thunderbolt and droid 1. I had to in order to get them working properly again. A factory reset would work for about a day, I had to overclock them to get them up to day 1 speed. Considering iPhone for UI smoothness....

Aye man do what you want, there's always a downside to either OS

I know. I've always been an android guy. I love it, I really do. But I always feel like my phones just get slow after a while. The thunderbolt was so snappy when I first got it, and when I use it now it feels ancient.

Any phone will get slow after time. Rene mentions it every so often during the iMore broadcast that he usually does a clean install at updates.

It's odd that you need to work so hard to keep the performance up. I've been through a bunch of phones, I like shiny new things, but I've never had them slow down as quickly as you seem to. I've had the DNA since launch day and the only reason why I performed a reset was to get my SIM to play nice when I changed phone numbers. At reset, I didn't notice any performance issues.

Do you mind sharing what apps you have installed? After you do a reset you might want to load them piecemeal to determine whether one of the apps is causing the performance hit.

Hey Bespinct, what does "piecemeal" mean when referring to loading apps after doing a reset as you mentioned?

Not familiar with the term piecemeal but I'm pretty sure he means one by one. I will do this when I reset. Haven't had the time yet unfortunately. Work has been demanding lately.

And how would one go about this procedure of going through each app one by one and thoroughly checking them before their installation?

He's referring to installing the apps one at a time after the reset and testing them for a couple days to make sure the behavior doesn't come back.

Yup, I meant one by one. Basically, you install the first application, use your phone and see if there is a performance hit.

You could also do groups of apps, and uninstall one by one after the performance hit in seen.

Still haven't had a chance to factory reset. I'll probably do it in a couple weeks after school is over. Finals are killing me. I did take some screenshots to show the apps I have installed.

Here is an imgur album. Photo Album - Imgur
