Phone to replace 2013 moto X

I just cracked the screen on my moto X 2013 and need to replace it. What are the best options with the following criteria:
Verizon Compatible
5" screen or less (I would prefer the smallest decent phone I can get, the same or smaller than my x)
Android 5.1+, prefer android 6 for security
under $250 new or used in good condition.

s6 falls into that price range.
If you want to stick with moto you are limited (droid maxx 2, g4, etc are all larger than 5")

How does the s6 compare to a nexus 5x? I would have to buy a used s6 for the same price as a new n5x and I like the stock android on my moto.
