Phones slowing down over time

Would you be able to give us a breakdown of what causes a phone to get slower over time? For a more specific example, Samsung Galaxy S phones are pretty bad about this, while my wife's Nexus 6P is still running butter smooth.

Might be a better topic for an article or a podcast.
