Yeah, well, the Easter Bunny isn't either. LOL - It actually comes from Pagan traditions tied to fertility. Kind of like: 'Hey! Look, here comes Spring! I hope your cow has calves and your chickens have chicks.' Missionaries blended Pagan traditions with Christian traditions to create a 'comfort zone' for the people of the Germanic regions.
You can put it on a parallel with the time period when missionaries went South of the Border and combined Saturday night Margarita drinking with Sunday services and Bloody Mary's. No, really, my brothers told me that when I was a kid and they'd never lie to me!

And no, I'm not going into the attic this time to get down the baskets! Yeah, I did it for the wreath but I have to make a stand somewhere and this is it. OK, I did go in the attic again, but I object to being put in that position. My wife is laughing now. My work here is done.
