So I just got the Photon for $1 at Sam's. Seemed like a steal. No issues so far, but when I went into the storage setting, I noticed that it only had 8.92 GB of total storage...8.75 of which was available.

I was under the impression this was a 16 GB internal memory phone. Am I looking in the wrong place? What's going on?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

The phone has 16gb of internal storage. But just like all phones with built in storage, certain space is allocated for /data, certain space is allocated for /system, certain space is allocated as SD, certain space is reserved as a holding tank for OTA updates, don't forget we have a whole nother operating system (webtop) using some space etc etc etc etc

HERES AN ARTICLE from when the bionic launched and the world was up in arms over available space

Rinse and repeat for most phones that have a large amount of internal storage.

I personally wish they would market phones with the *usable* storage space and not the internal before partitioning. Until they all do it, nobody is going to do it because people want to buy bigger better harder faster phones and technically these phones have what they manufacturer claims they have, it's just not all available for use.

Till date, I assumed that the internal storage that is mentioned by the manufacturers is the consumer "usable" storage. Would expect all the manufacturers to stop marketing the way they are doing & be specific wherever required.

Well, at least with the MoPho, unlike some other phones, you can put a 32 GB micro SD card in to get some extra storage space.

Coughonexcough :D

You can still get easy 40gb, plus use motocast to link your pc up to use from afar

Sent using my MoPho-King photon

Exactly... My 320gb hdd only has like 292 or something before system files...

When you buy a computer does it exclude the OS in it's memory total?

I definitely see the logic but to me a computer and a phone are different only because the drastic size difference between them to start. Being told 320 and getting 290 stings, but it's a drop in the bucket and someone will get over it. Being told 16 and getting 9 is just shy of 50%. To equate them, it would be like buying a 320gb and getting 160.

Hard drives, i say play ball. Mobile devices, i'd say advertise available space

My first computer had 8g of memory "You'll never need more than that", the guy at CompUSA told me - and (if I remember correctly) 1-1.5 was OS.

Give it 7+/- years and we will probably have phones with 1T of memory and 25g of that will be OS :D
