Photon Q keyboard backlighting inconsistent

The backlighting on my Q's keyboard is very inconsistent. And calling Motorola for tech support was a huge waste of time. How do I get this dang thing to consistently backlight the keyboard when I slide the keyboard open?

Go to menu settings > language and input > keyboard back light > always on.

Should keep the back light on full strength all the time.

I just tried to do just that and it doesn't even give me the option to change it =(
