Photon Rattle

They all have this. It is the power button cap. It is not specific to your phone.

I am holding the power button, and ALL buttons, as I gingerly shake the phone forward and backward (if you are looking at the screen). The button cannot rattle if I'm holding it in place. I've even held the button down while I shook it, which, to me, rules out whatever part beneath the cap might be shaking.

I will post a reply once I inspect another unit at the store, after work.

Don't shake it too much... you'll go blind!

WOW I figured this out before everyone else? :)

The rattle is the CAMERA/LED! haha

It's very weird but try this. Activate a LED flashlight app and you'll hear a little "click" inside the phone. Try shaking the phone and there is no more rattle. I think there is a tiny magnet in the phone and when the camera or LED is in use it doesn't shake or rattle anymore. I hear the little click when i turn on the camera too.

It must be loose buttons. Shake the EVO 3D and compare the rattle to the Photon and you will be happy you don't have the EVO 3D.

Phantastic... it's the camera LED. Do as Astrolux says. That's it. Now, does this mean the camera LED is bad, or is it normal?

i thought it was the camera LED, but... on my phone it actually seemed to be the headphone jack. plugged headphones in, rattle disappeared. unplugged headphones, rattle stayed gone

strange

mine is triggered with the camera as well. Start camera and hear a click then no more rattle. Stop camera and rattle returns. Weeeeeiiiiiiiirrrrrddddddd. waiting on a teardown guide.......

Mine stops when camera is turned on as well! At least we are getting somewhere. Is the "camera LED" the flash? Why would that rattle when it was turned off? :-\

Mine does not rattle at all. It sounds like a variety of parts can be a little loose, and it varies from phone to phone.

I just got a replacement for a Photon with wonky vibration, and this one has the rattle. Don't remember the previous one having it. And, it's absolutely definitely something with the camera--turn on the camera app, something clicks, and the rattle's gone. Turn the camera off, and the rattle returns.

It's not a HUGE deal, although it does bug me. If this is common to all or even most Photon's, I won't bother returning it, but my concern would be that something's loose that shouldn't be and it'll eventually fail (probably right after my return window). However, swapping is a pain, so...

Update: Note that if you want to see if you have the rattle, don't move the phone side to side, but rather move it frontwards to backwards, if you will. The rattle happens when something moves in the direction of the screen (and away from it, of course). Definitely seems like the autofocus is loose until it's actively engaged.

I just ordered the Photon... please tell me that MANY of you DO NOT have this new rattle experience!!!

I do not. It feels very solid and nice.

Did you try the test I indicated above? That is, gently shake it frontwards-backwards (not side to side). It's not a creaking, but a rattle as if something's moving. As I indicated earlier, is something in the camera (probably the autofocus mechanism).

I have a poll going to see if this is a common problem. If it's not, then mine will have to go back (again).

Hmm, if I hold it right to my ear, and shake it gently front to back, there is a very faint "clink" around where the camera is. I would not call it a rattle, as there is no more than one faint "clink" per time I move it, and often there is no sound. I would never have noticed this if I had not held it next to my ear to try your test.

This is very comforting. So, it's not like you will hear or feel it rattling while walking down the street, right?

Sorry to point it out like this. I know how frustrating it is to NOT notice something and then have it pointed out. :(

I hear it only when I (pretty much on purpose) shake my phone in that frontwards-backwards motion. I do _sometimes_ hear it when I put the phone to my ear, but pretty much only when I'm thinking about it. I don't think it'll be a huge problem, and my phone is perfect otherwise so far. The camera works without problem, so it doesn't appear to impact performance at all.

Really, it's more a matter of being concerned that it's a problem that will fail later. If enough phones have it, then it's more than likely just a design thing and won't matter long-term.

I'm not sure I would call this an issue. If you have to hold right by your ear and shake it to hear something.
