Photon Support Group For Palm webOS Users

This is my first post here. I've had the photon for 3 weeks now and first hated the os but absolutely love the hardware. I've since gotten used to the ui and don't miss the pre as much. The card system web os has is amazingly simple yet effective.

Cards are definitely what I miss most. I used to be able to start an email, check something on my calendar, or on another email, or whatever, and return right where I left off. I didn't have go hunting for my partially written note in the drafts folder out something. Things didn't mysteriously close if I had to check something else.

I also still miss the keyboard, although I am getting better at swype.

I like that stuff opens right away, through, and that the gadget doesn't freeze and stutter.

oh,and I miss having the function I want on the screen. Why does the phone open to my last call, and not to either the number pad or contact search? Why isn't there a button tip press to start put send an email without digging into a menu? And why is there am annoying voice to text button where I constantly hit out by mistake?

I miss the cards too. I also miss the touchpad and the overall ability to know what is running at the moment simply by looking at the open cards.

I DON'T miss the phone freezing multiple times a day, being sluggish, not having all these apps, and attracting scratches and smudges.

I dumped all the widgets and went to a solid black background to improve battery life and the UI is essentially the same.

Howdy fellas, i'm a former Pre minus owner and got photon little over a week. This was the first place i came to as i was frequent dweller on sister site pre-central and still am coz of my hp tablet....any who i came here and downloaded the preferred apps as suggested by milominderbinder but few days ago i started to get this nasty message:

the process com.motorola.service.main has stopped unexpectedly

I checked whether any updates i forgot to install which i did and took care of it. Thinking that it would take care of the problem but unfortunately i'm still getting it today. I have no clue what is causing it. Help.
Oh! and i miss the cards and swiping so bad once in a while i would try to swipe on my photon habit. :p

Phantom Skinz resolved that nicely on the Pre. Mine still looks shiny and new. I have a Skinz on order for the Photon. Yeah, Gorilla Glass may not need it, but it worked so magnificently on the Pre that I'm going with it again.

How did you get plain black? That's an option I'm interested in, but it wasn't obvious how to do it, and it wasn't my top priority to research.

(I'm also interested in porting the background I used on the Pre. Do you know how the 7 screen thing works with background photos? I haven't ported any music or photos over, yet, but perhaps will do that when I have a free evening or weekend.)

I dumped most of the wedgets, but I kept the weather widget. Maybe that's not worth the power drain, and maybe there are better weather widgets out there, but I sort of like it and haven't gotten around to playing with alternatives.

I have never seen that. I haven't installed _everything_ Milo recommended, but I've installed a large fraction of them.

You might want to try uninstalling everything, and running the phone stock for a few days, to check if it's a hardware problem or something. A new unit might solve your problem.

You know what else I miss -- I miss being able to swipe almost any list to delete stuff from it. I used my "recent calls" list as a quick sort of favorites, and deleted stuff from it all the time to keep it clean. I keep trying to swipe junk off my recent calls list on the mo pho, but of course that doesn't do anything.

yup

I also put an invisible shield skin on my Photon. I didn't put one on my Pre and wish I had. My Pre screen is scratched, plus it has the crack from the usb port.

I would also be interested in how to do the plain back.

I copied my pre wallpapers and some photos of my kids that i like to use for my wallpaper. Well, the Photon doesn't use the whole wallpaper or photo that you choose to use as your wallpaper, it just uses a small square of it  I have a great pic of my kids that looked beautiful on my pre, and if I try to use it and just put the square around their faces, it blows it up too big and it's grainy looking. I don't understand why it doesn't just use the picture as it appears on the phone.

Oh, and I just noticed that as you swipe left or right to get to another screen/page (not sure what they're called, but where the social networking widgets are or the weather widgets are), then the picture moves too, so eventually I could just see one kid if I go far enough.

I just read one of the reviews on the wallpaper app that said you could get the same effect by taking a picture in the dark. Doh! Didn't think about that ~ lol.

That had occured to me, but I prefer this. I used another app, also called "no wallpaper", which just creates an additional option in the main wallpaper menu for "no wallpaper". It's free and doesn't ask for any permissions, so I can't think of any downside. (Unless it crashes the gadget, I suppose, but that seems unlikely.)

By the way, did anyone else find the default wallpaper to be so busy as to obscure the icons? I thought it was a very odd chioce.

Yes, all of the stock wallpapers are too busy. I'm currently using the one with the moon and the grass, but I'm not in love with that one either.

I'm also thinking about moving my app icons to another page. I'm missing the clean look of my Pre screen.

I just want to find something that doesnt kill the battery. Performance is not an issue on this phone.

Some days, I don;t use much battery, other days I'm at 50% by 10am. I am using Executive Assistant and I think all the notifications are killing me. If I check battery usage it shows the display as using up 30%.

Really there is no other way to fix this that would be really painful? I guess i will give it a try. Oh and by the way is there a way to get Free tether on this thing? -- Thanks

I got to swap this phone out due to a phone app problem. What all are backed up automatically? Is it like webOS?

I keep forgetting to ask how do i get Yahoo messenger, gtalk, etc messenger? In webOS its all integrated i cant figure it out on here. Thanks

Almost nothing is backed up automatically. I swapped out my phone and sent hours reinstalling stuff and resetting stuff.

Paid apps, contacts in your google contact list, and calendar items in your google calendars seem to be all it "backs up" by default. At a minimum, jot down a list of all the free apps you want to re-install after the change, and copy your contacts to Google if they aren't there. (Although the Sprint store can slowly slowly slowly move your contacts if you remember to ask them to, and have time to wait for them to.)

There's a section in the "getting started" part that talks a little big about backups. You should check it, too.

See the Setup section of the Getting Started, under
Set Alerts and Ringtones
...
? Contact's ringtone: Home > All Apps > People > {contact} > {Ringtone}

I tried to add a little to make it more clear.
This doesn't work on my moto photon. I finally found where it is:

Home > All Apps > Contacts > {contact} > Menu > Options > {Ringtone}

Perhaps an update to the top post?
