Photos being deleted without being asked

My wife has a moto E (kitkat 4.4.4) and she now tells me that for the last month or so it's been deleting photos - they have been auto backed up though. I updated google photos app to the latest version and turned off the free up device storage, but it still seems to be doing it. I've not set it to take photos to the SD card, and also turned off auto backup. Is there a setting I've missed that might be causing this. there is about 300mb spare on the 2gb internal so there is plenty (?) of space. She has just told me that whatsapp photos have now disappeared.
Any thoughts?

When I removed the OneDrive app it also deleted all my camera pictures, which were stored on an 8GB SD card. Other that one time, I never experienced pictures being deleted on 4.4.4. Not really helpful, I know...

My phone was updated to 5.1 by Motorola and it is really nice - a lot faster and easier to navigate than 4.4. Though I did have to root it to free up space (650MB free ATM!). Maybe an OS update will solve your wife's photo issue.
