hi there,

I've just come back from a holiday and most of my photos seemed to be damaged or corrupt. In the gallery I get a grey icon with a lightening bolt or crack at the top.
I've transferred the pics from the sd card to my laptop and when I click on it image it says cannot open as file is empty. the size is 0 kb.
Plus some photos appear to be there as they show up fully as an icon. when I double click the picture the image is only partially there, the rest is just a solid colour.

Please help

Yup, it seems your files are corrupt :( Did you save them to SD card? Maybe the card got fried... I know it's not much comfort, but I strongly suggest you start using a backup service like DropBox or Google +'s Photos.

Thanks for getting back to me..
Yeah they were on the external SD card...The thing is that one minute they were fine, phone off...Phone on and CRAP !!
Some pic's open perfectly but most don't.
I can still see the image as a thumb nail but when I open it, I just get the grey icon with the lightening bolt. Some photos are partially lost. I can see a quarter of the picture and the rest is a plain colour like blew or grey depending on the base colour of the photo.
I really need to save these pics, please if there is anyway I can recover them please let me know.

Is it a SanDisk card by any chance? I had issues (and there is a known bug in 'older' SanDisk cards with newer Samsung phones) with one of those and the same thing happened, it even mounted/unmounted the SD card randomly. I know there are some tools to try and recover lost sectors and corrupted files off an SD card, but you'd have to do this from a PC card reader, not your phone.

No its not a scan disk card, and I have a card reader on my laptop.
I've transferred the files on my laptop but certain photos open fine (same ones that open on my phone)some have no thumbnails and their size is 0kb and the others open but the image is partial only.
Please if you know of any free recovery software let me know.
Ive tried recuva and no luck
Artplus says if I buy it then the pics will be recovered :(

I just had this happen to me when I got back from a trip and over 130 photos were 0K in size and could not be accessed. I did a deep scan on the SD card using Recuva and got all my photos back. It is a 32GB SanDisk Micro SD card, but now I am not able to save photos from the camera app to the SD card or view them using the Gallery. I can see and access the photos through Astro file manager.

Hi, I am having much the same problem, I bought an sd card for my galaxy s3, came home my holiday and transferred all my photos onto it and they came up with a grey icon with lightening bolt, so i transferred them back onto my phone and it is just the same, how can i get them back, preferably free, can anyone please help? Desperately need these photos

What did you use to recover your photos? I know this is an older thread but I'm hoping to find some answers. tia!

There is an app in the app store called photo recovery, not sure if that is what Rocky_khan was referring to but it might be for anyone following this thread and trying to recover their photos from their SD card.

This has happened to me as well. I have tried everything, but they stay the same. Can someone please help?!
