That sideways photo crap use happen to me when I uploaded my pictures from the computer too. I found out that I had to resize the photos prior to uploading because the picture files were too large.
Do they still upload sideways when you upload the photos directly from your phone?

it can happen either from the app or from the desktop and a slight resize is the answer because it adjusts the orientation at the same time (set by camera tags), which is the real issue.
