2nd Picture looks like a World War II Coastal Gun/Forward Lookout Bunker! There are several of these, up and down the Rhode Island Coast that are still visible... one of my earlier Sunset picture has one of the huge ones in the background. The State actually created a Fisherman's Memorial up on top of the Mound created by the fixture! The hill to the right of the sun with folks standing on top was a Gun Mound/Ammo Storage Unit!

Yes, it's a ww2 lookout / gun placement.
My son is pictured taking aim on zee Germans . He has just recently taking an interest in that period of history.

Being a coastal area we have lots of gun placements and tank traps dotted about.
The Germans would have to have been fair mad to take on the Scots of my great Grandfather / grandfather's generation.
There is a saying - I wouldn't have liked to have met them in a dark alley. .
