Pictures help

Ever since the last update, it won't let me use the app to place pictures for contacts.
It will have the option under "use as" and when I go to add it to a person, it lets me go through the motions but never changes their display picture.
Also does the same thing if I try and do it from the other end and edit contact > edit/add display picture.
Go through the motions but it never changes.
Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

Nexus 5x with newest, stock Marshmallow.

When you go into contacts, and edit, you can't modify the picture when you tap on it?

I can.
But when I try to finalize the changes, they don't appear in the contacts afterwards.
