Mine locks multiple times a day. I thought I heard it only required unlocking only when you put it on after charging over-night.

I think it locks when the sensor on the back recognizes that its not in contact with skin.

So if your wearing the watch loosely than it might think you took it off and lock the screen.

if samsung pay is enabled it will lock. once i got rid of that it's been pin free.

You should only need to enter your pin upon putting the watch on, or after a long period of inactivity (ie. sleeping). So maybe a couple of times over a 24 hour period. You can also make it more convenient by picking a pin that's easy to punch on the tiny keyboard.

There is an option to require the pin only when launching Samsung Pay.

Go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock > Usage and select Payments.
