Ping question

Hey,
Can somebody explain what ping is? I check my data speed with speedtest.net app sometimes and it often shows me good dl/ul speeds (a few Mbits) but high ping (like 500 ms). And in fact when I use my browser on my phone, the sites open up very slowly, it might be from slow ping?

Wrong ping LOL. He's talking about network latency.

So the higher the ping value, the longer one needs to wait for a website to start opening, am I correct?
