Well, not death, but disaster at any rate. Yesterday pink patches and streaks began appearing on my Strat's screen. It gradually spread like a fungus until the entire screen was a deep pink. I took it to a Verizon (non-company) store, and the guy said that the keyboard sliding in and out might have damaged a connector ribbon.

Last night before I went to bed a small blue patch had appeared at the bottom of the screen. By this morning the screen is almost entirely a kind of deep sky blue. It's even hard to read than the pink.

The device is not totally unusable. Maybe I'll wait and see if it turns a pale yellow that makes the screen more readable. :) I'm 7 weeks away from an upgrade, so I don't want to go out and spend a bunch of money to either fix this or get a temporary replacement. I'm thinking of just turning off the data plan and using it for a phone only; but then I won't get calendar updates.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any suggestions??

Update: the screen is entirely blue, very hard to read. Except for a small but spreading patch of black in the lower left-hand corner. Uh-oh. Looking into used Strats on eBay. It doesn't have to look good if it will work for 7 weeks.

Aaand the final update. The screen is now almost entirely black. I took it to a repair shop. They say the LCD is failing, and they want $189 to fix it, too much for a phone I can upgrade in 7 weeks. eBay, here I come. Hope no one else runs into this.

My husbands phone just did this & we are still 9mths away from upgrade. VZW told us that it HAS TOO be internal crack, meaning he damaged the phone & we had to pay the insurance deductible to replace it. The phone had not had any trauma to it & & not even a scratch on the phone, but VZW gave us no option.

Disgusting. These screens do fail, and cracking has nothing to do with it.

Sounds like you already paid the deductible to get a replacement phone. For others who may have this problem and haven't gone that way yet, other options include:
  • Repair at a local shop.
  • If you don't live near a shop, Cell Phone Repair in metro Atlanta has a mail-in service. They're the ones that quoted me $189, or $149 for a used screen.
  • Buy a used Stratosphere screen on eBay and repair it yourself.
  • Buy a used Stratosphere on eBay. I ended up getting one in great shape for $77 including shipping.
It all depends on how much you can afford to pay for the 9 months you'll have the phone. I wish you the best!
