Pixel 2 8.1 Chrome Virus?

Or you can download a good browser with adblocker enabled. Try Samsung Internet, one of the best browsers out there. It also supports extensions so you can install a few adblockers if needed.

Thought I'd give the Samsung browser a try after reading this thread and the first site I went to(android central)got the spam pop up telling me I had a virus. I guess none are immune, uninstalled.

By tapping on "< Google Play Store" in the below screenshot, I was able to get back to Google Play Store and all seems to be OK. All apps seems to be working.

Wondering if there are any precautionary steps I should take now, or how this type of situation can be prevented in the future.

Maybe this is part of the Google User Studies I enrolled in yesterday - ;)

This popped up on my moms phone today (she has a huawei ascend xt 2) and she brought it to me asking what to do. Always best to just hit the back button and never hit install on those shady popups.

Dunno, only tried it on this forum site but also couldn't get it to rotate to landscape either . Checked all settings. Think I'll stick with chrome. Also opera beta browser has an awesome text reformatting feature that works so well and never get spam pop ups, love the text wrap! . Choices for all, lots of options.
Also the Sammy browser kept asking me to sign in?

See that's odd again. Samsung Internet definitely doesn't ask for sign in.

Are you sure you have the correct browser?

Thank Cheetah Mobile for inventing these types of ads. Google will be destroying these in an upcoming Chrome update...

Yeah, that's the one. I used a galaxy phone years ago which is maybe why the sign in as I had an account I closed but they probably kept all the info waiting to pounce again. That pop up is easily dismissed but re-prompts me everytime I reopen the browser. It's ok, I gave it a shot, never did like Samsung for much of anything else after that phone experience and all their bloat garbage.
If anyone hasn;t tried Opera Beta lately it may surprise you and in a good way.

I had the same issue it was tied to a app I had download "fast" which is a speed test. Once I uninstalled everything was fine!

I get a lot of these pop-ups and redirects when I'm on THIS site.
I started a thread but apparently I'm the only one getting these pop-ups while visiting this site...r

Hello everyone,
I'm new towards android. Recently when I browse into a website (decent one) . There is this pop up message stating I've been infected with 4 viruses and 28.1% risk of damage . There's basically two pages one which is '' your system is heavily damaged by four viruses . ' which leads has the ''ok'' button there . As for the second page ,it's a Google sign giving me the steps to tap the button and install app for free as step 1 and open the app to fix the browser as step 2. I've pressed the ''ok'' button for the first page which leads me to the second page but I did not download the app at the second page . I'm just pretty worried if I'm infected by any malware or viruses .

I'm just worried if I've been infected by any viruses by just clicking the ''ok'' button but not the download button . Any advice on that ?
I'm super afraid anything would affect the phone . It'll be great if I could get some feedback or help on it !
Thanks !

just worried if I've been infected !

You haven't been... It's an ad... An upcoming Chrome update is going to disable the function that allows an embedded object in a page to redirect you to an external site like this.

They are trying to fool you into downloading some piece of junk tool to clean up the non existent virus that they claimed you had in the first place.

So I guess my device is basically fine right ?

Right... these ads are a scourge upon the world. They are so invasive that they do a wonderful job of convincing people that they have a 'virus' on their phone.

First... Android really can't get a virus, in the traditional sense. The OS is just not designed to run the same as a desktop running Windows so its really not capable of getting infected in the same fashion, nor can it really spread them the same way. Now... malicious apps, on the other hand, do exist. For those most part, those require that the user install a bad apk that exploits some security hole to do its dirty deeds.

Here's the thing... most every one of those malware apps usually target known security holes. Because they know that the vast majority of phones in use are running old, vulnerable versions of Android with old, vulnerable security patch levels.

You do not have such a phone. You are most likely on the Dec 5th 8.1 update, so there really isn't any old security hole there to exploit. I can't really recall any malware apps that targeted zero day exploits... it's always one that's going after phones running years old software (of which there are millions upon millions).

But that's not here nor there... think about it... you go on to a site and all of a sudden you get pushed to a page that is screaming in your fact that your phone is infected. It might get cute and pull the model info out of the user string to make it look like it ran some sort of scan. It won't let you leave the page easily and keeps loading you back to that "YOU'RE INFECTED!!!!" page.

Think of it like this... you're sitting on your couch, watching TV and you hear the doorbell ring. You get up and open the door and there's a dude standing there. He immediately starts screaming in your face that your house is on fire and the only way to put it out is to buy a fire extinguisher from him. You look around and its obvious that there is no flames about and as you politely close your door he pushes it open again and starts screaming about a fire.

What do you do? Do you buy whatever crap he is selling to shut him up? Or do you tell him to pound sand and slam the door in his face?
