Pixel 2 camera: massive disappointment

my wife has an iPhone 6s and her pictures are terrible compared to my xl2. literally makes it feel like she has a phone from 2008.

I went to a festival and saw person taking a video, so I thought I'd get a video too. I noticed that the other person had been able to zoom in really close. I was so disappointed to find Pixel 2 was incapable of taking such a close up .... The other person had either a Samsung or iPhone.
Also I'm honestly not at all impressed with the camera. If I have my Lumia 930 handy, I take photos with that because it is light years ahead - even though it's an old phone.
I don't know why people like the Pixel 2, as I regret wasting money on it as there are just too many issues with it, such as poor battery performance (have to use it on battery saver mode continuously to get more than a few hours use), and in particular the inability to charge and use head phones at same since since they decided to take away head phone jack.
It's a lot of money to pay, especially considering that the phone is unindated with adverts ....
Massive disappointment

Everyone I've shown shots taken from my 2XL is utterly impressed with the quality... From Samsung owners to iPhone X owners, the most common response is 'wow'.

The only thing I can think of is, no offense, user skill. Most every one of these top tier phones is capable of taking great pictures in even challenging conditions. Some require more effort to get there, but the Pixel will ... And by a wide margin... be the easiest to get the best shot. If you can't get the shot with the 2XL, in all likelihood, you're not going to get it with a different phone. Now, there are some exceptions... Like a shot where optical zoom is the primary criteria... But otherwise, its not going to be bested all that often.

Cellphone cameras are, for the most part, ok for social media and little family digi snaps and viewed on relatively small screens.
A couple of the biggest “problems” with them are the tiny sensors and slow lens(es).

Software attemps to iron out some of the shortcomings, however physics is physics

I used to feel that way until the Pixel.... Don't get me wrong... It won't match my pro or amateur equipment but the Pixel does a hell of a job and it HDR mode it gets the dynamic range better than anything I own.

As I mentioned, some do a ok job for sm post, casual digi snaps for family viewing, etc. (and the pixel is one of those better. Ones), but anything more, especially in less than ideal conditIons is simply asking too much of the camera.
Even the pixel, as all cell phones, have a tiny sensor and slow lens and the physics just are not on its side. In addition the inability to use a flash is another downside of cell phone cameras (interestingly enough, a few doe 6 or 7 years ago could use a Flash). The little LED thingy is not a flash. It’s a light that the phone turns on for a relatively long period of time.

I’ve taken some pretty much ok photos with cp before but have pretty much given up for anything except a causal shot now and then. Just too many limitations.

I agree with you , while they do a decent job for social media and stuff, a camera on a phone is not my main reason to owning a phone. All these phones cameras today are pretty much same. At least they better then what they use to be years ago like flip phones lol imagine cameras on a phone today like that ... hahaha that being said pixel camera does not disappoint

I don't think anyone that has a real knowledge of cameras expects cellphones to compare. I have often heard people compare some of the flagship phones to DSLR like quality. Of course that's not true, however I don't want to take this thread off topic.
