Pixel 2 is pretty enticing.

I am right there with you...except for the "Essential" which was a let down. So I went Pixel to Essential and now I am returning Essential and will get the Pixel XL from Google.

Had 2 Pixels from Verizon - sideloaded the non-Verizon updates and all was well. When Google discounted the XL a while ago, grabbed one, sold the Pixels, and no longer had to side load updates.

The XL, like the Z Force Droid I had, is a little too big for my comfort zone, so I think I'm going back to the Pixel 2 when they are released.
Whether I get it from Google, or the local Verizon store, will probably depend on the deals offered.

Not sure what you mean. I get the updates to my Verizon Pixel XL (bought from Verizon) as quick, or quicker than some of my buddies who bought unlocked. When/why did you have to "side-load" an update?

I side loaded them so I didn't get any Verizon apps - which were really no big deal - but it was great learning how to sideload.

ETA - depending on the deals - I'll have no issues getting a P2 from Verizon.
I've mastered sideloading now -

I see. The only Verizon app I know of that I have is "My Verizon" which is very useful in tracking data and if I need to change plans, etc.

Anyway, back to the topic. The Pixel 2 XL is enticing to me and I continue to be shocked that I like pure Android as much as I do now, since I didn't like it all a few years ago and vastly preferred Touch Wiz to it. The fact that I am not missing much from it with the Pixel XL is really a testament to how far pure Android has come in a few years.

Getting fast updates is great and all, but it never really mattered to me much. Having a good day-to-day experience with the OS currently on the phone was a much bigger deal. Until recently I found the stock experience wanting, but now, I have to say it is pretty great. Keep it up Google ..

I think this is what the Pixels are all about - one of their main attractions - I couldn't see having anything else after the last year of bloat free/latest updates with the Pixels.
Yeah, but at the same time, there's some other, cheaper phones that essentially have pure android. Heck, I think the OnePlus 5 ran even faster than the Pixel.

I don't know considering it hasn't been released yet. I'm just saying there are phones out there that can compete with the Pixel in terms of speed, stability, and features.

That may serve you well but it's not a good solution everywhere for every carrier. I also doubt the updates are as fast.
