You don't need the Google wallpaper app, just go to wallpapers, select the 3 dot menu button in the top right corner, and select live wallpapers.

I've been using these live wallpapers for a few days now and haven't seen any change to my battery life.

First full day using this (beach scene) and my battery life was cut way down. Usually around 50% after a work day but today I was at 18% when I got home. My on screen time was less than usual too.
