Hey guys!

I've been out of touch with smartphone market for quite a while now. With Black Friday coming up, I'll be looking to replace my Galaxy S6. As the title says, I'm currently looking at either Google Pixel 2 XL or Huawei P20 Pro.

As you probably guessed - first consideration is camera. I've heard great things about both, though after watching a couple comparisons, I have some worries. P20 Pro seems to be a bit overzealous when it comes to saturation, also looks like it has some problems preserving details in highlights and shadows every now and then. At the very least, seems like Pixel does it better.
On the other hand, lack of pro mode on Google's camera is a big issue for me. There are times when I'm after specific effect in a photo, which require manual setup, rather than letting camera give me what it thinks is the best average. (Any good alternative camera apps which can still make use of Google's software wizardry?)

As far as performance goes - I want the phone to deal smoothly with typical everyday tasks - calls, emails, snapping photos, social media, browsing web, listening to music, watching a video now and then, with good enough battery to get me through the day or two with moderate usage. I'm not interested in gaming on the phone.

I'm hoping to stick with the phone for 3-4 years, so I'm also interested in how they perform long-term, how long can I expect them to keep getting updates etc.

Thanks in advance for all replies!

I would recommend the Pixel 2XL as well. I have mine for about 9 months now. I will be selling it as soon as my Pixel 3 gets here.

I'd say that both phones are good options for you and would easily last for the 3-4-year range that you are hoping for; but based on things you mentioned like smooth performance, good camera photo editing, and secure and regular software updates for a longer period of time, I'd definitely recommend the Pixel 2 XL.

Did you end up making a phone decision, OP?

Yeah, I went with the Pixel 2 XL.
P20 Pro was about 50€ cheaper than Pixel on sale, but between camera, no bloatware and faster updates, Google felt like a better choice.

So far I love it.
Thanks for all the replies, guys.

That's so awesome! I'm so glad you got it! Did you buy it outright from Google or from your carrier? And what colour did you get? I got a white Pixel 2 in April and love it; but I would have liked the Panda Verizon had it been available for the 5" model!

I got it from a 3rd party store. Sadly, my country doesn't have official Google store yet and my carrier doesn't offer it - 80% of their catalogue is either Samsung or Huawei.

As for the color, I got Panda, since it was the only 128GB version they had. I love the look, but it'll land in a Spigen armor soon enough. I find phones more comfortable to use with those bulky cases. :P

Ah, that's too bad about the online Google Store not being available yet! That's awesome that you got the Panda colour! And yup, my phones end up in cases too, even when they're beautiful colours!
