Pixel 3: Looking Ahead

We can have both

I suppose...but in the scheme of things, an excellent FHD display and superior battery life are better than an amazing display and average battery life. It takes more power to drive more pixels - if our eyes aren't even capable of seeing the increased resolution there is nothing to be gained and only screen on time to be lost. There have been 4K cell phone displays in the past...they didn't seem to revolutionize things, and they didn't become the default...

If there's one thing I've learned hanging out around here about what's important is really up to the individual and how we use our phones.

Sometimes I wonder if people see the notch and think "ooh that's the next great feature!" instead of recognizing it as drawback one has to suffer in order to maximize screen:body ratio while still allowing for sensors on the front of the phone.

Personally, I really, really dislike using phones that have virtually no bezel at the top and bottom as it makes accidental touches a real problem for me. I'd rather have minimal bezels (not much smaller than its present design) that don't generate the touch issue, while also allowing for front-firing speakers and not having to find workarounds for displaying media, etc, than negating the bezels entirely.

I couldn't agree with you more. I too would enjoy some bezel as opposed to a notch.

To me the notch is a partial bezel all it's own. It is most annoying when viewing anything in landscape, looks off balance.
Having it is not a positive feature even if apple fans think so. If you check out macrumors they are overwhelmingly fine with it. SMH

Lastly, if google could have a separate notification and ring tone slide that would be great, sometimes I don’t want my notifications as loud as my ringtone and vice versa

Yup, that's the same for me. Also need one for the alarm volume.

Yup...can be expanded when adjusting any volume.

Edit: forum app isn't playing nice with my photo. Will try again later.

Yes! I was thinking the exact same thing. If some people don't like bezels on the sides of their phones, why would they accept a bezel right at the top of the screen? And I never thought of how off-kilter a "notch phone" would look when you'd put it in landscape mode... Aahhh!

The unannounced LG G7 had a leaked image that showed the notch as optional, or black enough that it 'disappeared' if chosen in settings. A screencap also showed that the time was subtly placed in one side of the notch, etc

I don't really care for the notch myself, but the leaked LG stuff looked decent.

That's awesome! I've really respected LG for their innovations over the past year. Hope the G7 does well!

I pointed it out to my daughter before she decided on the X and it didn't phase her.

Yeah, I totally get that. The huge majority of users on Macrumors aren't fazed by it at all. If one is into Apple it's ok no matter what they do.
Aside from the notch is lack of a home button requiring all the gesturing to do anything. And all this for north of a $GRAND$!! Sure glad we have choices. Whew!

I don't really see what the big deal is with the notch, I can take it or leave it. I'd prefer not to have it but if it makes the production easier then so be it. for me I just hope they have facial unlock and keep the speakers facing forward. I moved from Samsung to Google and no regrets, really enjoy this phone.

Will be interesting to see what they come up with. My predictions (not to be confused with a wish list):

1. a notch at the top
2. dual cameras
3. IP68

Battery will be about the same. Wireless charging may make a showing as well because of Apple. The Apple notch is a guess because Google seems to be trying hard to make it work. Might see a dark theme too.

I really don't think they'll do the notch. Just want to accommodate the other manufacturers. I wish they'd work on the keyboard to make it as smooth as iOS.

If they are going to do a notch, don't do it as dumb as Apple. Dedicate that top space to the notch and the status bar and nothing else. Have it go dark for full screen apps, never extend the display there. I don't want to see some lame black flap on the top of the phone. Go 19.5x9 or whatever is needed.

Stick by LG. Their AMOLED technology will improve... LG isn't some display noob... They have the engineering know-how to advance. Samsung is being a pain in the rear to customers, let them pound sand.

It's becoming more apparent that Google will go with multiple sensors, just a hunch based on the new APIs. But do it better... Don't go with zoom or wide angle... That does nothing to improve overall quality. Maybe take huawei's approach with a monochrome sensor, which should have three times the raw detail as color, and pair it with a dedicated color. Keep extending their lead in computational photography, develop HDR+, RAIZR, and the visual core and get it done.

After that, just keep doing what they are doing.

So my partner got the Galaxy S9+ and I have to say, when it comes to hardware, it's so much nicer than the Pixel 2 XL.

Metal and glass, feels extremely solid, has a nice heft to it. It's just immaculate. And again, seeing that beautiful AMOLED screen, it reminds me how far ahead Samsung's screens are than what we got with the Pixel 2XL. I have to say that looking back and forth at the S9+ screen to the P2XL screen, I'm not happy with the screen Google put on the phone.

Honestly, if Google go with LG's OLED screen again with the Pixel 3, I don't think I'll get it. I feel cheated that my partner got the Galaxy S9+ which to me looks and feels absolutely premium with no skimping on hardware, got a Samsung wireless charger, 8" Samsung tablet and really nice AKG headphones in the box for cheaper than what I got just the Pixel 2 XL for with no bonuses (not even headphones...).

As much as I love the software experience of the Pixel, I'm not going to reward a company who's deliberately going to go with inferior parts and still charge top dollar. It's just a phone after all and if Samsung and make a phone of that quality and include all those bonuses at an RRP cheaper than the Pixel 2 XL, then something is very wrong over at Google.

The S8+ and the S9+ are pretty close to being the same phone. Which means you could have very well compared the S8+ and the 2XL during your purchase decision and come up with the same conclusion. So if you feel "cheated," that's kind of your own fault. I'm guessing the S8+ probably came with all the same stuff you had mentioned as well.

I hope Google sticks with LG for their screens. The fact that Samsung pretty much has a monopoly on mobile device displays is not a good thing. More competition breeds innovation, so I'm all in for LG.
