My best guess is that the chipset isn't the issue.

I keep my phone in a case for a couple of reasons. 1. I tend to drop my phone inexplicably. 2. For resale value. I buy my phones full price and when it comes time to sell them I like to get the most I can possibly get for them. I don't want to lose money over scuffs that could have been prevented. As far as the design decision Google made with these Pixels I recall seeing something that said that this is the design decision Google decided to go with. It may explain why the Pixelbook also has the same window. Uniformity isn't bad. I fully expect the Pixel 3 to look similar to this with a window. I hope it has wireless charging. I don't expect a headphone jack but I do hope they include headphones this time around. The screen on the Pixel 2 XL is a first gen product as a result of the investment Google made into LG display. Have we forgotten this already? It wouldn't make sense for Google to make an investment and give up on it within a year. I fully expect that Google will go back to LG for the display again this year. I also expect it to be improved compared to the original that is in this phone. This phone won't have a MicroSD card slot. Google doesn't want to do it. Not sure why people keep wanting them to do it when Google has said it's not happening. All in all, I can't wait until the Pixel 3 comes. It's the phone I plan to get to replace my Pixel 2 XL.

I keep reading so many people say that they hope that Google goes with LG again for the screen even though their screens are nowhere near Samsung quality. I don't understand that. Hell, even LG doesn't want to use their OLED screens lol. Hence, the LG G7 or whatever they plan to call it, not using one.

I was under the impression that they are going with LCD as cost savings measure.

Haven't read that anywhere, you have a link? Also, it's relatively new technology so it can't be THAT cheap. Plus, you should be putting your best foot forward on your new phones, and I think they know that OLED is not their strong suit (on phones anyway, on TVs they're essentially the Samsung of displays).

I read it but don't remember where. With regard to displays I'm perfectly happy with the OLED on the Pixel no matter how many times I compared it to Samsung.

Oh yeah, the Pixel screen is perfectly fine for me as well. I can tell that my S9 screen is better though, so I think the problem they'll run into is when people are looking at them both in the store. The screen is what people see, and the majority of consumers don't care about updates. The screen is something they'll want to work on in order to capture more sales. You don't have to convince Android diehards and enthusiasts the benefits of a Pixel.

Agreed on the side by side comparison. What would help is being cheaper than the corresponding Samsung model. I'm constantly amazed at how much a $50 difference can sway someone when talking about a $7-800 device.

I hear you, BUT ...

Suggest that both Apple and Google want another OLED supplier besides Samsung. Samsung is a modern monopoly when it comes to displays.

Let me ask you this, do you think either Apple or Google would pony up almost $4 billion USD if the plan was to NOT use LG displays?

I never said I didn't think they would use them. I just don't see why people WANT them to use them when they're clearly not as good as or anywhere near as good as Samsung displays. I personally, want the best in my phones. I don't actively hope that I'll get a subpar screen. The screen is definitely usable, but I'll always hope that they use the best technology in a product that I plan to use.

Well, to get the panels beyond "subpar" as you say, there needs to be an incentive to do that. Selling more panels, for instance, comes to mind. So, yes, for the long term advancement of the Pixel brand, I want competitive pricing for parts to keep my end user cost from exploding by being beholden to one supplier that can hold my device manufacturer for ransom whenever they feel like it.

I just think it's something that Google and Apple are using them, and LG will not be on their upcoming flagship. Our costs are gonna explode regardless, look how much the Pixel 2 XL cost with an LG display. It costs more than an unlocked Galaxy S9+ (MSRP, not including discounts that come and go for you nitpickers out there). They may sell more panels but Google will sell less devices which also affects the long term advancement. If anything, maybe they should switch it around. Let them practice on the little Pixel and for the "halo" device(the XL), use a Samsung panel. Just my 2 cents. I'll likely get a Pixel 3 either way, but I think they'll sell more if they use a better panel.

LG didn't cheap out the display... OLED phone displays are still new to them, so you should expect some growing pains. But LG is one of the world's biggest display makers, they are going to improve the tech.

Samsung has been leaning on their OLED monopoly and squeezing other companies to pay. Apple's paying an arm and a leg for X panels, but they don't have options.

The next gen panels will be better. And LG will work with, rather than dictate to, phone makers. They don't need to match Samsung, they just need to provide a viable alternative, and improve things as they go.

I have no issues with my 2XL's display. It's it class leading? No. But that doesn't take away, by any means, my enjoyment of what is an incredible device.

The G line has always had LCD displays. And with it being positioned as a less expensive line than the V series, LCD is a lower cost alternative.
